Northwest Indiana Private Pond
« on: Mar 02, 2005, 04:52 PM »
We are on the very tail end of our ice here in the Hoosier State.  Most of the State is now ice out, and the Northern part of the state could go at any time now.  But, I am squeezing the last possible fishing i  can (and still be safe)  here are some of our latest pictures.  We had to put out about 30 foot of shore boards to get to the safe ice, but it was worth it.

Me with a couple papermouths

A sample of the gills we caught.

Here's Joe with a Channel Cat he caught on a tip-up

Uncle Joe with the kids and the crappie

The kids and the catch of the day.

I hope to get in at least one more outing.  We will see what the weekend brings.

Fish on!

Do the leaves of trees stay greener, in the autumn, does the colour of the sun, turn crimson white? Does a shadow come between us, in the winter?

It is actually a Channel Cat, and we get them all the time on the tip-ups.  They love the Shinners.

Nice fish. Your lucky our ice here in East Central Iowa has been gone for a week all ready.

I think the channel cat are a littel more on the predator side then the scavenger side of the food chain as far as cat fish go.  We have tried to fish for them with dead Minnows or cut bait, but they take the active minnow every time over the dead bait.  I do find small blue gill in there stomachs in the winter as well, which leads me to believe that they are pretty aggressive on the pray.

Nice mess o' grub. Bullhead will bite through the ice as well.  Never targeted them but when I was younger we used to catch them once in a while jigging for perch and on small fatheads on tipups on Lake Luzerne Ny
