a sunday morning on skaneateles
« on: Feb 13, 2005, 04:44 PM »
this is the most die hard ice fisherman that i know.  my buddy broke his ankle less than two weeks ago and he was doing this today.  we put some roofing nails through the feet of his crutches. we made creeper crutches.  worked surprisingly well

here are some pics of our spread

this just looked sweet

here is a shot of the tip downs that i use.  its nice you can set them up for any species, and they are very sensitive

this is what we ended up with.  kind of slow but the big momma on top made it o so worth it

im pretty sure the wire bends down when a fish tugs on it.

Nice perch!  :)

Do the leaves of trees stay greener, in the autumn, does the colour of the sun, turn crimson white? Does a shadow come between us, in the winter?

they work really nice.  you can watch a fish just tap on it.  they are so sensitive and the fish feels very little resistance .  i have caught so many more fish since i switched to this style rig.

doesn't the wind mess with those tip downs?

it can, but if i turn them with there backs to the wind it really doesn't cause a problem.  its better than having wind flags all day like you can have with tip ups.

They look pretty cool. Ive never used them b/4 but the people who do swear by them. For me, I think they would be a lot of walking around. Unless I see a flag about 3ft high, then im in the shanty lookin at my watch waiting for 4:20. Doht, its 4:20 all the time.
Do you use ice line? looks like you only have mono.

Id like to meet ya but Im in Saratoga. Skaneateles is too far a drive for me. Are you near Binghamton? I fish Lake George for Lakers (slammin them this year)
and small area lakes for perch. You and your buddy should come here sometime. Ive got wheelers and budwieser, place to crash. And my wife cooks.

I also have a 21' inboard with a cuddy. Nice boat but gettin old. Trolling for lakers on L.G. is just as good in the summer. We usually camp on one of the Islands when we fish. In fact I reserved a spot on "Long" Island on L.G. for the 4th of July.
Every year in October we fish the salmon river. Is that near you?

I fished for the steelies 2 years ago at the black hole. Fly fishin'. I was there about 20 min. Hooked up with one and as I was trying to walk on dry land i slipped. I was on top of the rapids. I ended up past the shallow water in Douglaston. Long story short I was rushed to the Syracuse Trama center. I was dead. They say the cold saved me.

wow dude.... that is crazy.  the black hole is a good spot, but not for you anymore i guess.  you have to have total and utter respect for the river.  it is a powerful force not to be reckoned with.

You bet its a powerful river. Next time its bear claws for me. Wont stop me though. Ive been dodgeing bullets since I was 14. Just makes me a little more cautious.
Oh yeah and the only other person that was around was my girlfriend. We werent dating long and I floated right past her while she was taking pictures and I was too embarassed to yell to her. I heard that 11 people went in the water that winter and only 3 lived including me. The unfortunate were pulled out at douglaston. I was found about a half mile down from there.
