6 mile lake in Albany/colonie
« on: Jan 24, 2022, 06:55 PM »
Does anyone know if you can ice fish this lake? I have fished it in the summer with my son. Never had much luck. Would like to take my son out soon. Thought about trying it there. Tia

Really?  I never knew that. I was told that at one point they used to stock that place with fish out of the Alcove Reservoir - pike and walleye included. I've only ever caught bass and panfish there.
Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange,
Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain.

Where exactly is it? I’ve never heard of it…

Everything in these posts is up to date but I live a mile from there and would not spend my time fishing it. Travel to Thompsons or Lawsons.

It’s off of Fuller Road by the Nanotech facility

In the 90’s and probably before that there were some real nice sized rainbows in there. Also I can remember a photo in the times union of mayor Jennings I believe it was, holding a walleye that was at least 8 lbs that they grabbed out of the alcove to put into 6 mile. I would imagine it has been mostly fished out these days but I have not been there in nearly 20 years.

Past Sunday there was 3 shanties on it . Still gets stocked with trout . Seen during kids tournament a really nice walleye was brought in . Fished it a couple winters ago and caught small crappies and sunfish didn't mark much that day .

Shortly after the opening of season, last year, I saw a fellow catch 3 nice trout there.

From Central Ave. (Rt.5), go south on Fuller Rd., towards Western Ave. (Rt.20). You will come to a round about. It is right off of it. Large sign, says Lake Rensselaer. That is it. We locals call it 6 Mile Water Works. I grew up fishing there.

I grew up very close to this lake. Back in the 70s and 80s, it was a pretty impressive lake for its size and location. It was stocked by the city every year with fish from the Alcove (as were all of the lakes in the city other than the lake at the university) and was full of huge pike, walleyes, pickerel, Crappies, Perch, bullheads, big humphead bluegills, and the occasional trout.

Today? Small bluegills and the occasional bass.

The pike were gone by the late 80s. The guy who owned the snack stand and boat rental place paid a bounty for pike. He'd cut off the heads, and dry them, then mount them to his shack.

The walleyes, pickerel, crappies, and perch were gone by the time the city stopped stocking from the Alcove (circa 2000?).

The DEC still stocks it each year with 8 inch trout, and when then do, the lake gets massive pressure for a couple of weeks. I'd be surprised if more than a handful survive the first month, much less survive long term.

And then there's the people who take 5 gallon buckets of fish away with them.

There's just not much left in the lake to catch anymore.

I still fish there from time to time as it's really convenient for me, but short of a stocking program and some catch and release requirements, it's never going to recover as a fishery.

EDIT: I found a post from someone else that suggested they still stock from the Alcove. If that's true, it's not nearly in the volume it was back then.
