Home made projects for next year
« on: Mar 10, 2021, 06:47 PM »
This year I taught a neighbor's kid how make "Salt Valley" tipups. One by six boards cut square, a couple inches of PVC pipe to hold line, piano wire trip flag and a pan head screw with a notch cut into it for the trigger/release. It's a Cub Scout project, but sure felt satisfying to bring out some "old dog" tricks.

That got me thinking. Back in the 60s and 70s I remember seeing tip downs made of 1x4 pine and a bent coat hanger wire with an egg sinker slipped on to make 'em neutrally balanced. Then there were the hole cover ones with a schooley reel and a bent nail trip for the flag...

Gimme some stories, and hopefully some wood shop plans or at least ideas. The older, the better. It'd  be cool to learn some tricks from outside my neighborhood.

Last couple years I've been taking the tops of open water rods and epoxying them into a 1" wood dowel. Router a flat reel seat in the dowel the attach a reel with heat shrink. All but 4 of my rods I use are made like this, 2 I bought and I made 2 light jigging rods this year, can make them any length you want.

I have made a few ice rods from old broken spinning rods.
I would cut off handle and cut off tapered peices until I can get it all to fit back in the original handle. Old flimsy ugly sticks are my favorite

I was considering this DIY ice shelter over the commercial type.
Does anyone have detailed plans?

I take the old rod and cut it off at the handle leaving about 1 inch, then epoxy the tip in and wrap with thread then epoxy over that.

How about you share the "Salt Valley Tip Up" plans? I still can't envision one.

Okay. Salt Valley Tipups 101

Materials:
1x6 scrap pine
Plastic coated wire
scrap PVC pipe between 2-1/2 inches and 3 inches
Piano wire
Pan head screws

Cut the 1x6 into square stock. Cut the PVC into 2-1/2 sections. Find the center of the board, and using a hole saw set, rabbet a 1/4 inch deep channel to hold the PVC. Use construction adhesive or epoxy to glue it in place.

Cut the plastic coated wire into a couple 18 inch lengths for the legs. Drill holes in the sides of the board, and slip the legs in place. (Don't glue 'em. Eventually you'll have folded the legs enough that the wire will weaken and break. )

Clamp a pan head screw into a vise and using a file or grinder, notch a V into the head. Set the screw onto the top of the tipup.

Cut a 16-20 inch length of piano wire, and attach it to the  opposite corner from the notched screw. I add an orange plastic flag cut from an IAMS feed bag.

The piano wire flag and notched screw act as a trip mechanism that can be adjusted for greater or less resistance. **perfect for crappie btw**

Total cost per set up is under $2, and this project does not require the use of power tools.

May your tip-up spool while your flag raises with hopes of landing the big one.
