Tricks for keeping bait alive while fishing
« on: Mar 10, 2021, 08:28 AM »
Hi Guys,
I'm relatively new to ice fishing.  This season, I experienced my bait being frozen before I could use it.  Earthworms and meal worms specifically.  My buddy had trouble with his spikes, too.  We were putting them back in our cooler, thinking they would be warmer than the 0 degrees F outside temperature.  Thanks for any tips.

I keep mine in a bait puck in an interior pocket of my bibs or jacket, seems to work

Yup, pocket guy here. Sometimes I’ll throw a hand warmer in the them to get em to start moving in the real cold and blustery conditions

I do that with worm containers too.
Before it gets to that point, I wrap the containers in an old towel for an added level of insulation.
Of course if it's REALLY cold, inside the jacket they go...

I keep my spike/waxworm container in my pole bucket; It's easy to get at; never put your bait container on the ice; they will freeze. Follow the recommendations at ja-dabait.com for storing your bait and keeping it alive.

Mine go in a frabil styrofoam worm box,, it is 2 sided so you flip it to get you bait, and then I keep that in a small insulated lunch bag.. they are good to single numbers  treated like this. .

go to garage sales this summer. Look for small thermos. I keep my bait in these. Cheaper than the pucks and better insulated.
