I keep seeing little flecks on the sylvan beach webcam, been checking it last week or so. Not sure if they are people or birds, too far away to tell.

There are guys off of Sylvan.

Be careful guys if you go poking around. That ice is rotting from both sides.

Pics, spud, float suit. Even a life vest would be a good idea.

I haven't been out and this is not an endorsement of the ice conditions there. The only way to tell is with a spud and extreme caution. See Reeleyz post above. Don't do it just cause other's are.

Yo Bruce,

I am with you 100%. Like I tell my kids, and grand kids, bad things can happen when you follow the crowd. It just might be time to get the long poles out, check your gear for the open water . Go shop for some new equipment and most of all display to your kids the correct amount of caution and respect one must have for the late season ice fishing conditions. Be a leader , not a follower.

Start each day with the exuberance of a 10 year old . Do not allow those around you to diminish that exuberance.

I thought about checking the ice out but believed the risk was extreme.  I believe the ice has changed into crystals with a frozen layer on top.  So the ice may be firm in the morning when you venture out and then the hard layer thaws from the sun and warmth.  If you are out 1000 yards or so, even with a floating suit there is a lot of ice you would need to break through to get back to shore. Additionally, there is the risk of loosing all of your gear.  It is just not worth it for a few fish.  I found this site on the internet http://lakeice.squarespace.com/thawed-ice/ discussing thawed ice and the risk.  My advise is stay off from Oneida until open water.

That is exactly how it is out there FM. Crust on top, then a few inches of slush. Then a foot of crushed ice being held together by water.  :o

I checked it myself. Not the ice at Sylvan but at Lewis Point but it's all the same.

It's junk ice, trust me.

If you can't drive north to find better ice, there are open water fishing opportunities for walleye, perch, bluegills and sunfish at Several places along the Oneida shoreline,  it's feeder rivers , outlet river. and surrounding area. No need to haul ice gear out there and put yourself or others in harms way by  finding a weak spot  ice fishing on sketchy , variable strength, junk Oneida ice.

I would never tell anyone to not go ice fishing if they thought it was safe...we all have different standards of what is safe and not safe.....but...

I would remind them that things can change in just a few hours time on weakened or junky, rotten ice.  That trusty spud that got you OUT there safely to the fishing grounds ,   might not find you a safe path BACK to shore when you decide to head in......just a reminder.

My boots on some ice... A line down a hole...Some fish on the screen... And a flag in the air !......Winter is Good !!

On the beach cam it almost looks like a partially submerged snowmobile?
Yup now a truck pulled up and there is a person on the ice.

Just read the last few posts, had to check beach cam. Yep, they are still in there. Holy crap, I would have a hard time convincing myselt to just walk on the ice now, let alone take a sled out.

Which one of you wrote the message in the snow on the sunset cam? Too funny!  ;D ;D ;D

Maybe they were going to float it back to the beach on a iceberg like a few years back ;D and things went south.
