An inordinate number of guys and gals who would normally be working had lots of free time off to fish this past winter because of the virus lockdowns. Stuff sold out in lots of stores plus while the inventories were sold down the companies producing the goods might also have been closed or having a hard time getting the parts and materials or the laborers to make things. I would expect the fallout from this pandemic to be with us for a while longer and even finding a new car or truck right now is not real easy with the microchip shortages.
If I agreed with you we would both be wrong!

If I'm not mistaken, most gear was out of stock before the season ended, so there was no need for retailers to offer any closeout deals since they had nothing in stock that needed to be liquidated. I did get 10% a new clam ice shack from a local bait shop, but you're right I didn't see much for end of season sales either.
Only a couple of places near me sell ice stuff, and the shelves looked like Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard by the end of January. One of them went out of business, so from now on it's basically gonna be a long drive into the city or online purchases for ice gear around here.

My brother works for Subaru, and they have had short term layoffs twice now because they were waiting on chips/electronics.

I work in industrial scale food production, and our materials supply and shipping has been a mess lately. We haven't had any shutdowns, but keeping certain supplies in stock and getting finished product out the door on time has been a real pain. Our orders have been gangbusters since covid hit, but timely delivery on those orders has been strained.

We just bought a new SUV and had to go way above our price point with a loaded vehicle because the shelves were bare over the chip shortage. A buddy is trying to build a new home on his hunting property and can't get the materials or has to pay through his nose for the lumber. The new home will end up costing about $30K more than it would have just last summer.

30k is a soft hit over night one of the builders here raised his prices 100k. 180-280 to 280-380 overnight

I have to wonder, no crystal ball here, if you spend $30 or $100K more for a home today than it would have cost just last year, will it always be valued at the inflated price when or if things ever do get back to the normal we had.
I know on the SUV car lot they had a couple models we wanted that were just base models with few options and just 2 that were fully loaded and none in between. We did not want the bare bones base but we sure didn't want all the bells and whistles we got for an additional $6 grand. Subaru actually had vehicles on their lot they could not yet sell because they were delivered without the chips to run some of the electronics. They had no idea when the chips would arrive. All the dealers seemed to have lots of the plug in Hybrids if that fits your needs.

In economics, this is called the "sunk cost fallacy". We assign a value based on what we paid, and can not accept that cost has no impact on current value. The worst stuff is computers. I have to pry 15 year old laptops away from my dad to recycle, because he can't forget what they cost back then. If the cost of building homes goes back down, which it will, you can't sell your 3 year old home for more because lumber was sky high when you built. It will be listed with all of the others, and will have to compete. Prices don't go down as fast as they went up, especially for homes, because people can't accept the loss.

End of season deals are thin this year, because inventories are low. Also, Amazon has the ability to lower prices a little bit at a time, and wait for someone to bite. It is more like an auction than when Cabelas used to put things on fire sale at the end of the year. I also think that the amount of (our) money the government sent out is making people feel rich right now, and they are spending it if they feel secure in their job. When the stimulus punch bowl is taken away, there will be an overshoot to the down side, and in a year or so we will see where the new normal really is.

The best thing about ice fishing is that is can be almost free, or you can spend as much as you want making yourself comfortable. I just got my dream machine- a 2009 Ski-Doo Tundra 300f. 375 lb of slush floating, perch slaying snowmobile. I am sure I will find plenty of things it needs before December.

Both of these drill combo kits would not be my first or second choice ..but they meet the specification  for an Auger set up..and they have a vast amount of other tools in their line ups..and may have appeal for some

Flex 1400 in/lbs

https://www.lowes.com/pd/24V-1-2-in-Drl-Drv-Kit-Turbo/1002986412

Kobalt 1200 in/lbs

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-XTR-1-2-in-24-Volt-Max-Variable-Speed-Brushless-Cordless-Hammer-Drill-1-Battery-Included/1002273868

This HD Milwaukee deal on the Starter kit w/free gift (2804-20 hammer drill) is still active..this would be my first choice ...followed by the Dewalt 900 series drills

I almost hesitate to add these, but the heated clothing is on sale. I have bought my wife mittens and socks, and they seem fine, but you are never quite sure with this Chinese stuff. Note you need to plug into USB like a power bank- not included. Heated insoles. $8

Ice armor Chopper mittens- 2XL $14

Fox River rag knit mittens- $4-7

Ice fishing starter set:

Seat/backpack, rod/reel/line/lures/tackle box $29

5 inch auger- $33

https://www.amazon.com/Strikemaster-Mora-Blade-Auger-5-Inch/dp/B0002N2FTO/ref=sr_1_37?dchild=1&fst=as%3Aoff&m=A2L77EE7U53NWQ&qid=1623725667&rnid=10158976011&s=warehouse-deals&sr=1-37

All you need to catch fish for $62 (except a license)

Add a 750 in-lb brushless Ryobi drill and 4AH Lithium Plus battery and charger for $109

https://www.directtoolsoutlet.com/Products/RYOBI-ONE%2B-18-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Brushless-Hammer-Drill-Kit-/p/P1813

And the drill adapter for above auger for $10

I think that would make the cheapest electric auger setup I have seen- ~$150 all in.
