There was no ice on Higgins as of midweek with just enough shore ice to make it
hard to launch a boat.  Bummer.

Saturday night was cold.  There's hope.

Hope is all that's left my friends. :-)
Please keep me posted if there is any changes.  Thanks!  I'm itching to jig up some trout...

Thanks for the info.  I'll be up at Houghton Sunday with my buddy before he heads back to Iraq.  I'm thinking Higgins the following weekend.  ;D

I was on Higgins Lake on 1/28 from mid morning until about 5 PM.  Four inches of good ice out to about 40' of water.  But it rained hard here all night Sat and all day Sun the 29th so I would be very careful.  I did catch some small perch ranging up to about 9 inches.  I threw back about 50 under 7 inches.

Great, thanks for the info.  I just heard from a buddy of mine who lives at Houghton lake- he said he was pulling his permanent shack onto Higgins tomorrow.  I guess he's confident the ice is on Higgins to stay.
Thanks!  Lakers here we come!!!!!!!!

Average 6" at best right now. Perch & lakers are slow but getting better. My oldest boy was there today with hard work brought home a nice dinner.

Fished Higgins this past weekend (2/17-2/19).  North end was very slow. Had about 8 inches of good ice.  Fished the south end off sunken island in about 17 fow. Did pretty well on the perch, have to sort through alot of small ones though.  Look for the weeds along the perimeter of sunken island.
You can't catch em if you don't get out there!

KZ,

Thanks for the link.  What do you use to catch the smelt?
How do you set-up your rig for them?

fatboy...

i use a regular to small sized jig with a glowing green hali about 12" below that.  my pref is waxworms for bait.  if you don't have a green tube light, i'd park myself in the neighborhood near someone who does.  last time i was out for smelt in lower michigan, my buddy and i caught about 40.  i was disappointed until everyone who passed us on their way in said they caught less than 10.  i feel the light makes a difference.

Travis,

I'm going to try the green light in the morning for Crappie. Going to try the spot we got our limit way back on the first ice. Got a new Optronics green LED coming, Has six LED's and run on batteries.

Good luck on Asylum!
