Any States in the NE with Kokanee?
« on: Feb 13, 2014, 04:50 PM »
Hi All, as I get closer to retirement I would like to plan so ice fishing trips. Are there any States in the NE that have an established ice fishing program for these fish or would I be better off going out West?

Thanks - Ice

Used to have them in NY, but they stopped stocking them. One small lake in the Adirondacks has a small self-sustaining population, not open to ice fishing, though. There might be a few others with limited numbers of kokes.

Ct has a Kokanee salmon program and stocks a few lakes.  Check out the ct deep fisheries web page.   Good luck.

Per Tim Berry (Director of Ct. Kokanee Program) ... Only 2 lakes in Ct. Have Kokanee - West Hill Pond and East Twin Lake.
Only other body of water (east of the Mississippi) is Lake Nahatala in North Carolina.

The DEEP currently maintains a Kokanee Salmon fishery in West Hill Pond (New Hartford/Barkhamsted). Mature Kokanee are trap netted from West Hill Pond and transported to the Burlington State Trout Hatchery for spawning during the fall. After eggs are incubated and hatched, Kokanee fry are reared and stocked in the spring. Kokanee can be caught at West Hill Pond (New Hartford/Barkhamsted) and occasionally Lake Wononskopomuc and East Twin Lake (Salisbury).  Currently, the DEEP stocks approximately 75,000 fry into East Twin Lake.  West Hill Pond (Barkhamsted/New Hartford) and Lake Wononskopomuc each receive approximately 50,000 kokanee fry each year.
