anybody tip up fish after dark?
« on: Feb 16, 2013, 08:16 AM »
we fish lakes with panners, and pike as much as often, but with flags, it is usually, 7-12, , 3 till dark. With a lull in between. tonight we are considering, going with lanterns, after some specs, should we keep traps in?We seldom catch gills after dark, just wondered if pike shut down also. I ask this , because of all the threads on lights for traps lately, thanks

Walleye are good after dark but Northern don't have the night visions of a walleye and they shut down.

I generally agree, but I have caught northern after dark too.

walleye is my target after dark.  Crappie can also be very productive targets..
One suggestion I would make is to have some way of determining if the flag is up !  I prefer lil' shiner tip up lights.  You can make your own lights (do a search here, several post on making your own).
Others prefer to use some type of reflective tape and shine a light on them occasionally.  Either way works.  I just prefer lights as I get to see the "flag" immediately and theres nothing like seeing that flashing light waving in the darkness.

We love setting out a string of tip ups for walleye at night. We play cribbage and take turns checking the traps until the sun comes up.

We have caught some very respectable Pike so far through the ice on tip ups after dark, but on a very clear water lake. I don't think you will do good on pike after dark on a darker water lake. I would say in general a clear water lake will always be better for night fishing than a dark water lake.

I've left mine out all night, came back before sun up and had a pike on.   Not very common though.  Usually if I leave them out all night and there's a flag in the morning, you can count on it being a walleye.
