The Top prize was to be $10,000. based on  300 teams of 2. This is only "hearsay" but due to the abysmal number of 40+ teams. One figure I heard was $1600. zeus

I thought They advertised 30K for first providing there were 300 teams?  $1600 would be a joke if these guys are dishing out $250 a team.

Couple friends of mine fished the tourny exactly where i did fairly well on sat. Managed 15 pound 9 1/2 oz total weight for a 9th place overall finish. There was no payout for 9th place, but qualified for another tourny states side.

as fishcamp said my buddy and myself got 9th and qualified for the north american ice fishing championships in the states. no prize won, and they did not announce the prize amounts everyone won. we were told first place would be 3000.00ish. we weighed in 2 24s one weighing 6lbs the other 5 lbs 8ounces and 3 16ish fish. if we couldve gotten the 20-22" fish like ive been catching everyother time i go out there we wouldve been top 3 for sure.....but thats fishing!!  over all it was alot of fun, i didnt attend the fish seminar on friday night they put on, but heard it was very good, on saturday at the rules meeting the buffet supper they included was very good and we met a few nice anglers, the fellows from regina who brought out the snow bears and grizz were alot of fun.  overall good time, a few things need to be improved on this tournament, but it was their first year so im my eyes that was to be expected. lets hope theres a few more good reports about this and maybe next year more of you will try it out....hell i couldve went to the casino and dropped 125.00 pretty damn quick in there and walked away with nothing to show for it....so maybe the people complaining about the price will either keep it to themselves or pony up and give it a try.  on a side note i hope the fellow named Lee who im pretty sure is known in the fishing community got his truck off the ice with little issues, thats one heck of a crappy day he had by the sounds of things. so congrats to Stu and Holly for putting on a good tournament and best of luck for next year!! come on people we could have one hell of a tournament if people would show up!!!!!!

We all have reasons for not participating. In my honest opinion, the organisers started with the bar TOO HIGH. For many reasons I think expectations were too high. 300 teams =600 entrants. Some have said, it would have been better to have held it in March, when the temps were higher. Personally I doubt it. 40+TEAMS yesterday. March, an extra 260 teams,  extremely optimistic. zeus ;) ;) ;)

the guys from regina saskatchewan fished with a snowbear. not sure if they allowed him to cause he brought a grizz along for them to use as their mobile weigh scale or not. not sure on their rules on that one...man i wish i had one of those units, sounds like the cadillac of any fishing adventure!!  but cant win lotto max so the eskimo will have to do lol.

as for 300 teams being a bit high of expectations...you may be right but we can definately do better than 40ish teams!! and yes they did mention maybe doing it later in the year next year

Aside from this site I never heard very much about this derby. I have only fished the west side this year and there was nothing posted on this side. Last year when they had a derby out there there were signs all over . There were sign at every access point to the lake. They might have advertized in tackle shops but I bought my bait for the year and tackle so I dont frequent the shops much during the season.

I thought I read somewhere in the rules, hard sided shacks (Snobears etc) would not be allowed. Don't have that luxury, so why should I worry.  zeus. ;) ;) ;) ;)

Rule1. Participants may fish with or without a portable fish house. No hard side/wheeled houses. All portable fish houses set up must be kept open, with participants plainly visible until the 8:00 am start time. Contestants must be inspected before entering onto the ice.

Just copied this from the rules, Terry. zeus. ??? ??? ???

True, Malcolm  ;). I knew about hard-sides... guess I just never really equated a hard-side with a Sno-Bear before for some reason :-\. The tracks must've thrown me  ::)... too busy drooling on 'em, too ;D.

I was at the tournament and I thought it was run great...for a first year tourney! I talked to Stu and he said there would be some changes for next year. The biggest thing for me was lack of advertising which was one of the topics we touched on. As for the entrance fee a $125 isn't that much considering we had a great meal Saturday night at the rules meeting. Hell you used to pay $80 for LDB derby and there was 2-3000 people there. The tournament was fun and run great with only minor glitches which will be corrected for next year! The kids fishing seminar was fun and we couldn't of had nicer weather, my kids loved it. My youngest son pulled the only fish in of the day...a 1 1/2 lb jack...better than nothing! His dad also walked away with the tournaments largest walleye...just over 9 lbs.(applause here) Congrats to Stu and Holly for a job well done and a big thank you to all the volunteers who helped out. Can't wait till next year.

I ran into the derby info in Hooked magazine about a month prior to the tourny. Never came across to much more for the advertisement. The mag led me to the link but the Lake Winnipeg info seemed lacking! As HGG had mentioned, 1st year tourny, growing pains are expected and lets not forget about some of the previous derby's that failed and put a red flag up in peoples minds. Im one of the guilty ones that wanted to go but bailed. If it survived the first year and they make it an annual, I will definately be attending next year. Been regreting not going for the last 2 days now.

I fished the tourny and caught nothing until 1:15. Then started to pull them in after that. But on the saturday I was talking with the organizer and she said she put $10,000 into advertising. lol. I never seen one poster or anything. Just herd from word of mouth

How much would those full page ads that went in Hooked magazine set one back I wonder, M  ??? Better not to be throwing rumors around anyway, I think  ;).

I wonder if they will even have this tournament again?
I watched the videos on the guys that fish in the NAIFC, I think their more geared for Panfish.
Would be nice if they come back next year!
