I generally don't target pike as I'm more of a laker guy.
So my pike catches are limited, accidental and sadly small.    :-[

Just out of curiosity...are there outfits up there that take pike fisherman out during the winter?

I've been interested in going up there pike fishing for a long time....just no knowledge of where to go really.

I have all the gear...including snow machines....wall tent...that type of stuff.  Just curious.

i would suggest late march early april for targeting the big pike. the days are warmer/longer and the big girls seem to be a little more on the bite. i usually fish shallow that time of year, 8-20 ft of water. usually can pick up at least one 25lber every other time i'm out, and my best through the ice a couple of years ago was 38lbs. the big ones usually go back in unless gut hooked.
if you have a map of gsl it would help. i fish in amongst the islands in the north arm maybe 5km from yellowknife bay. if you take the kam lake snowmobile trail straight out towards the big lake it puts you right in the heart of big pike country when you reach great slave. it's actually not that far from trout rock lodge as the raven flies.
drill some holes and drop a cisco down, you should be into pike. the action isn't usually fast and furious, but i have caught fifteen in an afternoon on occasion.
make sure you bring an auger extension, even though it's been a super warm year there i still bust through after the extension joint is in the hole, maybe 40"-45" of solid ice.
cheers

Now there's some good info.
I have snowmobiled out there on several occasions but never dropped a line.
Maybe I should, I would like to ice a 38 pound pike!!!   :woot:
If I could only tear myself away from the lakers.   ::)

well we finally got out on sunday afternoon. took a bunch of friends out to "the camp" and dropped four lines in total. we managed 3 fish in 3 hours, 15lb, 13lb, and an 8lb. good eaters and i sent them home with all of the non-fishers in the group for a treat. sunny -3c and no wind, makes for an incredible day on the ice.
cheers
of course i forgot the camera :P

You did better than I did on Sunday.
I went fer the skunk on the pike.
What depth were you fishing in? I fished 4 to 17 feet.

Saturday was a much better day as I went 3 for 4 on trout with several missed.
Nothing big but fun none the less. Fish were caught on a steep dropping point in 40 to 60 FOW with misses and bumps all the way out to 105 FOW.

I always knew I was a better troot fisherman than a poike fisherman!!!   :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

i was in 12ft of water. i've fished the same spot for seven years and have been fortunate to have never been skunked. lot's of one fish days though. i've never caught fish in that spot in the summer, but i think it is a cruising corridor under the ice.

if your going to be good at catching fish though i would take your laker skill over pike any day. i've seen some of your pics on the website, and sheeshkabobs they are impressive. my best to date is 35lbs through the ice, and 22 in open water. i have downriggers now so we'll see what our pilgrimage to the east arm brings this summer.
tight lines

Two weeks from tomorrow TGF from BC and I are heading to the East Arm for 10 days of laker and burbot slamming through the ice.   ;D
Stay tuned for a report just after Easter.  If all goes as planned we should have some good photos to share. ;)2

sounds like you guys are in for some world class ice fishing. i don't have your knowledge of the hearn channel as i only made it there once. my wife and i camped on blanchet island for four days last summer, and had a ball catching lakers all day every day. good luck to you, i most certainly can't wait to see the pics.
cheers

Definately will have lots of pics probably even fish around Yellowknife for a few days ;)
I'm getting the heated tent and gear ready in the next few days to make sure everything is in working order.

Was out with 2 friends on Monday this week, super nice day, was raining on the sled ride out to the north arm. Within the first 45 mins had a 25 then 20 pound pike, really fat fish. Then some smaller 4-10 lb pike through the afternoon and finished off the day with a 9 lb burbot. And I had thought the fishing around Yellowknife was a little overrated.
Anyway, tomorrow am is going to be chilly, but after some trout or pike up the Ingraham Trail...which ever will bite!
