Broken Back?
« on: Mar 20, 2017, 06:02 PM »
This makes the second togue I have seen like this.  The first one came about 12 years ago on West Grand and this one I caught yesterday on a West Branch of Penobscot water.  It was released, but thought there might be some folks on here that have seen this or know what causes this.  Thanks!!

Have seen a lot of fish like this, not certain what causes it though. It may be Whirling disease. I also have a theory that electrofishing could do this or a lighting strike in the vicinity of fish?

I have been told it is whirling's disease, and also been told that it is a birth defect. There are a few threads on the NH board about it this year. Lake winnipesaukee has produced quite a few of these lake trout down here in NH. All the ones I have caught have seemed healthy, but I usually take them out of the lake (when legal) just in case.

Here's one of the threads:

Whitefishlover,

Did that togue have an adipose fin or was it missing? I couldn't tell from the photo -- there was some snow and shadow where it would have been,. I have seen hatchery-origin fish have curved spines like your fish.

I cannot answer that,  I had a young fella snap the photo real quick and got it back down the hole.

I've caught a few like that on Sebago, no idea what causes it.  I thought maybe it got hit by a prop when it was younger.

deformed vertebra in its back.  Either developmentally was shaped that way or happened with an injury.

Much like the one in my avatar.

It is definitely not whirling disease. It appears to be scoliosis, a genetic deformity. Not that uncommon especially if it is in stocked waters.

Attack by a loon when it was young
Coarse it could be due to global warming.

Whirling disease has not been found in any Maine fish. To all who fish in waters with whirling disease please practice simple biosecurity measures tp prevent its spread to new waters.

If it isn't found in Maine, how can you account for the fish in question?

It may not be found in wide scale numbers, but it is found.

Also, do we know how it is spread from pond to pond, lake to lake?

Is it solely a case of cross contamination by boaters, or maybe from migrational birds that ate a contaminated fish elsewhere and it's waste contained the eggs that spread in the new waters?

looks like more research is needed to make a correct diagnosis....

Are you talking about whirling disease? The link I posted at the top from the NH board has a lot of links with info. It is not spread by boats the way milfoil is, or by eggs. It has a very specific life cycle it needs to follow with a few different hosts.

"The U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service have created a list of management practices to control the spread of the Myxobolus parasite. Among there recommendations are:

Do not transport any fish from one body of water to another.
Do not dispose of fish entrails or other by-products that may hold spores into any body of water or into sinks.
Drain boats, equipment, coolers, live bait wells and any holder of water which can hold the parasite.
Thoroughly wash mud from vehicles, boats, trailers, waders, boots, fishing equipment and anything that comes in contact with spores or worms found in the stream bed mud.
Never transport aquatic plants, and make sure all equipment is cleared of weeds after every use.
Spores are particularly persistent in felt soled wading shoes. If you have any doubt about contamination, you may treat these with a solution of 10% chlorine bleach and water for at least 15 minutes. Thoroughly rinse with water before using your waders to prevent residual chlorine from entering streams."

I used to cut fish for a living, Cut many 1000s of #s ~ owned a successful fish market (til sold it to my partner ::) ) I saw many weird things like that. Most of that stuff you could see  where a broken vertebrate had healed or was malformed. The ABSOLUTE BEST though were the fists sized parasites in swordfish! If ya stomped on em, they squirted like a big ripe pimple!
