Braid to lure, or braid to flouro?
« on: Feb 16, 2019, 10:52 AM »
One of my rods is strung with blue braid. I dont feel like changing out the line. Should I tie direct to lure or do most people have a clear leader? I fish mostly panfish.

I spool all my reels with a fused superline. For pannies and walleye it's a fluoro leader, for pike, light wire.
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

I always run a leader when I'm using braid.  Microswivel or Uni to Uni knot.  I'm not the quickest to learn new knots, but I figured that one out from YouTube pretty easily.

Double uni knot is what i use. Use the wrong knot and baid will slip. Google animated knots if you're not familiar with it.

I always add a fluoro leader/working line to my braid. I join the lines together using a reverse Albright knot.

I have been using the new Sufix Advance Mono . It has very good knot strength and low stretch . I also tie it to braid as a leader with a double nail knot.
Oops! is too late.

I'm not an encyclopedia of knots, just know a few really good ones. Uni is right at the top of my list for reliability with all lines and versatility of use.

I’ve wanted to use flouro more for both ice and open too, but everyone has a different answer on the knots.  Same with YouTube, different answers with many claims to be the best knot.  Seems like flouro can be weakened on the cinching so it must be moistened. That much I know.   For that fact and incorrect methods has prevented me from going flouro.  I tried one knot claiming to be the best (sorry, don’t recall name), but I’ll be damned if I could tie it without the help of the video.  I have 2 knot apps too.  Guess it’s on me to practice these old fingers and mind.

I always use a uni knot for braid to fluoro connections when I'm not using a micro swivel. I agree, it's easy to tie and I've been happy with it.

I use a Seaguar fluoro leader on Fireline Micro Ice. Berkeley Vanish works too. People say it sucks, but I have honestly never had a problem with it. I tie a double uni if I am at the kitchen table with good light. In the shanty, it's easier to just tie a surgeon's loop.

The knot I use is the FG knot to attach fluorocarbon to braid in the summer and the winter.  Extremely small diameter knot and goes through eyelets smoothly.
Any day on the ice with little to no wind, is a darn good day.

I usually use a swivel, but if not I use a albright special.

On open water I use a FG knot, the FG is  tough to tie with lighter flourocarbon leaders for ice fishing but is IMO the best leader connection knot.
WINTER IS COMING!
