New ATV ?
« on: Oct 16, 2019, 07:19 PM »
Picked up my first ATV (2008 Polaris Sportsman 500 Touring). It has 89 total miles and looks brand new. Anything I should check out or change out? What kind of must have mods should I add? Will be pulling a two man Clam flipover.

I sold a Foreman 3 years ago with 120 miles on it after 4 years...no time to ride.  The buyer brought one of his buddies (a "wrench") over.  He kept shaking the rig looking for slop in the front end and other obvious issues underneath.  It was cherry.

Maybe look at that and battery?  Belt if is belt driven?

Throw some new synthetic oil in it and drive. What could be wrong with that many miles on it.      ;D
If your going to use it for ice fishing  look into some chains for the back..    ;)

With those low miles it probably still has the original belt on it, I would definitely change that, also have the battery tested or replace with a fresh one. Also a good idea to see if you can start it with the pull start and inspect the rope closely... Nothing adds insult to injury like finding a dead battery and then punching yourself in the mouth when the rope breaks and leaves you extra stranded.

Change out the fluids, the spark plug, and get a new battery. The only thing I would add is a digger auger mount and make sure you have a ball or some sort of receiver to pull your sled.
Great find with that low of miles

Winch rear chains and a piece of 2/4 to anchor under the ice for your winch if needed

Thanks for the replies. It already has a nice winch and a new battery. Plan on getting a windshield, thumb warmer and some chains. Looking at the Digger Auger mount. Installed an aluminum railing around the front rack that will hold two milk crates and a bucket. Going to mount my Helix 7 on a ram ball mount to one of the milk crates, using the cigarette lighter plug for power. Bring on the ice!!

I just bought the Tusk handwarmer grips and thumb warmer kit. Less than 60.00. Install was very easy.
