WOW! First trip of the year! (Flaming Gorge)
« on: Dec 22, 2007, 08:56 PM »
Our group caught over 50. Mostly rainbows, but I caught 2 lakers and a ling. And there were 2 other ling pulled out as well.

I caught 15 alone! That's a good day on the Gorge!

Here's some pics.

First fish up the hole

Different Laker

First Ling (missed a bigger one at the hole a few minutes before)

ya the weather was real good until the afternoon then it got windy but it was still barable. I did the numbers and as a group we actually caught 59 fish if I'm right on...so give or take a few. There were 8 of us. IT WAS AN UNBELIEVABLE DAY!

I didn't put a tape to him but everyone agreed on about 25" and pushin' 5 lbs. The ling i caught was a dink...but the one I had up to the hole was a good one. The ling bit while I was jigging??? Everything I've read says they like a non-flashy bait sitting on or close to the bottom. Just seemed weird....lol. Randy (thepolejerker) who i went fishing with today made that new logo. i thought it looked awesome so I added it to mine. He hasn't even joined the tourney yet! SO RANDY WHEN YOU READ THIS! JOIN UP!!!!! lol.

it was all capped where we were on the confluence. Couldn't see any open water near, but I'm sure the MAIN body of the gorge is still open or has very little ice. Haven't had to go out there and check yet....lol.

POK and BD, you can fish around the bend into the main body just south of the confluence.  My son-inlaw fished the old river channel yesterday.

They caught some lakers, but didn't score a knock out on them.  The best laker fishing will be when the ice gets to north of currant creek.

If the weather stays as cold as it is now, soon my friend soon.  Fishable ice at currant creek in a week and maybe buckboard in couple.

Me and my dad were pullin' out a lot of smaller lakers by currant this summer. Best one was around 6 or 7 pounds probably. My dad said we're gonna try for some lakers like this year....we usually don't. It's hard to give up a 60 fish day for a couple BIG fish. BD let me know when you come down and maybe we can hook up.

will do...  we might even come down earlier than february, we'll see.  i sure wish i had taken my boat down there during the summer to get an idea of the underwater terrain, but we'll just count on all you gorge regulars for advice on that again this ice season ;)

The Gorge is great. I loved ice fishing there. I was just getting it figured out when I moved. I miss fishing for the Macs. These are fairly old pics.

This Mac coughed up the remains of a 10" Rainbow

BD, there is a map available of the gorge showing underwater contours. Its very helpful in finding "The Spot". i bought mine years ago while living in R.S. I'll bet they are still available. I believe it's "Fish-n-Map Co. or something like that.

I think it was $10.00 or $12.00. The upper portion, from just above the confluence up isnt that detailed but still shows the river chanel, from there down is very detailed. It was well worth the $$. I bought several and cut them into 5 x 7 pieces and laminated them to keep in the tackle box. Then where ever I was fishing I just got the right card out of the tackle box and didn't have to open the whole map. Saved a lot of time searching for spots.

Those maps are water proof as it is right?

BD, the maps are good but beware.  The Gorge is down about 20 feet from hight water line, which the maps are based on.  This changes the whole structure and depth picture.  We were catching mac`s in some very unlikely places last year and God only knows were we will find them this year.

As far as mapping goes I use a Lowrance ifinder with their freedom maps sd card.  This card also has several other lakes in our area as well.
