Why am I asking you to be safe
« on: Dec 02, 2011, 11:50 AM »
Observed temps in Shoshoni next to Boysen.  http://www.weather.com/weather/monthly/USWY0156?month=-1
Since the 23 of November Highs  50 with only 2 days below 40   lows only 2 days below 21 with a low of 15.
So we have been marginally freezing at night and thawing during the day. Now it was colder the 30th low 15 and last night down to 5 and only up to 18 now.
This makes for very in consistant ice, so you could be on 4 inches and then step on 1/2 inch from last nights cold..  A friend of my dads went through in MT when I was a kid and they did not find him till the spring.  It was a horrible experience for my dad and all that new Red.  I also went through over my head and can say it is fear factor x 100%  be safe.  olefish

Thanks Olefish, you are right. theres plenty of time to fish this year, no sense of hurring it. Do you figure the same for Ocean as well? No one needs a reminder after your first hand experience.

I am unsure about Ocean. I drive over the bridge going to Riverton every day and have seen open water one day and ice then next, so this is how I get my info.  I spent over  50 days on the ice on Boysen last year and have fishing fever to.  By this time last year the lake had a good 7 inches of ice past south Muddy and parts of Fremont bay had people using their 4 wheelers.  By the 12th I pulled my 7x9 hut out and set it up so yes we are all bummed about the slow progress.

Hi,

Glad to see that video posted.
Good example of what can happen.

Yeap! Ice doesn't freeze uniformly and can be very un-predictable!

SAFETY! First and Foremost!

Thanks olefish! When I was out on Ocean the other day even with 4" of ice I was more than cautious. Didn't venture too far out but still managed to catch a couple ling!

Search and Rescue had to come get the ones that were stuck on the floating ice. They were on 4", early season so the whole lake wasn't froze, but since it's big water Gorge fishing the wind blew the right way, the ice cracked and it took 'em out to sea

Oh geez that's horrible! I've always wanted to fish flaming gorge but not if I keep hearing stories like that!

one reason I try not to fish a place where I may float out to sea.

Living in NY in my younger years you would always hear of this happening on lake Erie.

3 inches of hard clear ice will hold a full grown man up nice, I like 4 to 5 inches of clear hard ice, but to take my 4 wheeler out I need at least 6 inches, but normally do not take the 4 wheeler out until there is 10 to 12 inches of hard ice.  If the ice is talking it is building ice and is getting safer, if it is quite it is going away.

THANX FISH/HUNT 4EVER...normally I havent made it out till later when there was no question but this year Ive made it earlier so I wasnt sure. I didnt like that as I walked up to a hole,I could see the water moving up and down in the hole, like the ice was flexing up and down as I walked. That clear ice was super slick too, was glad I had cleats.

I've heard it a million times, but I've never really understood.

Why is the ice "building" when it's talking? Thanks.

Because when ice is building the "water" that's being frozen is expanding and pushing on other parts of the ice causing pressure. That pressure has to go somewhere so it's relieved by little cracks (or sometimes big cracks and shifts in the ice)....but what seems like baby beluga doing it's best to jump through the ice is really just the ice expanding...hence making more :)

And on another note of the ice expanding be real careful around the pressure ridges, the ice is always moving on these spots, or relieving the pressure here, seen to many people almost go through around them.

ive noticed that thinner ice 4-8" if you walk on big pressure ridges or places with lots of cracks, it is very sketchy.  you can cause more cracks and the ice can shift a little.  ive never seen anyone go in at these spots but it would not suprise me at all.
