Title: Northern Pike
Post by: Oaktree1215 on Jan 24, 2019, 12:08 AM
I have been catching fish through the ice for over twenty years on ponds and small lakes, I've never caught a Northern pike with or without ice, does anybody know of a place where it would be easier than others in northwestern Indiana or north central?

Only problem with Lake James is you’re not suppose to eat pike over 29 inches.

The Tippecanoe River has plenty of pike and you wouldn't need to go too far.  If your looking for lakes, try Lawrence or Myers south of Plymouth.

I have caught a ton of pike out of Hudson lake. Nothing huge yet, but there’s a bunch in there.

Looks like they changed it this year for Lake James. One 8 ounce meal a month up to 36 inches. And one meal every 2 months of pike bigger than 36 inches

I always check the consumption advisories because I do a lot of river and creek fishing. No telling what all gets dumped or has been dumped into the water. Hopefully the season is long enough for me to try more than one of the places you guys suggested.

Fancy new map for fish consumption info.

https://www.in.gov/isdh/23650.htm (https://www.in.gov/isdh/23650.htm)

If you make the trip to Kosciusko I would recommend Wawasee over any other in the county for numbers.

if you go to chapman, go out and to left.  there is a point out there(look at map).  past that point there is a necked down area.  done good all threw there.  its a high percentage travel route to the other basin.

lake james doesn't have a lake specific guide, its a state wide guideline. look at top of the page.

and you never know what home owners are putting in the water at any lake! that's not in any guide.

they did ease up on guide lines a bit.  wonder why?  walleye from the Maumee used to be a level 5, on the big ones.

wait hold it.  I went looking on dnr site and found this. http://www.eregulations.com/indiana/fishing/fish-consumption/  what do we believe?  lol

nice one!  this is sure the time to be doing it! nothing beats late ice and ice out season for slime.  I wouldn't be surprised to see a pic or two of a pig soon. somewhere in IN, someone is catching a couple 36"+ this week. ;)

I had my chance but blew it. Finally had a flag pop and I was like 100 yards away. Did the run and when I got there saw it stop spinning. Took my bait. 10 minutes later had a big mark on vexilar swim by and grab my jig rod and bit me clean off. Ha. Only one pike this season for me. A squeaker too

First time I have heard a northern referred to as slime. When I think of slime a brown trout pops into mind. Just my 2 cents, lol.

i think kings are the slimiest of that fish family. lots of slimy fish, but pike seem the slimiest that I catch, around here, plus that stench.  you never heard of snot rockets?  catfish are equally as slimy also I guess.

last week to ice that monster!  then it gets easier to contact more fish with the boat.

Lakers on the south end are reffered to as greasers, green fish or $100 bills.
