Made the maiden voyage this season at the home pond in western illinois. I knew it would be a tough bite today, but it was the only time I had the chance to get out. I managed a couple dozen crappie and a few yellow perch. My brother and nephew added about a dozen more with a nice redear. My biggest crappie went 12.5".
Got the gear put into service, anyway.
2.5-4" of ice.

Doesn't it feel good ?

It does feel good to get some fillets! Technically, they were not the first of the year...we took the kids out on the 5th and cleaned 65 yellow perch caught from the bank!

Good job, got a nice meal going already and we have just begun.

Took my boys (6yrs and 4 yrs) out today. 19 crappie, biggest was 12.5" The 6-yr-old managed 2 by himself, and the 4-yr-old reeled in a couple on my rod. Pretty slow day, but they both said they were glad they went.
6" of ice.

Went yesterday late afternoon and early evening to two lakes. Bite was slow and had 6 to 7 inches of ice. Won't be out for awhile with this weather we're having now.

Got out for the first time this afternoon. Hit a farm pond north of Springfield for the last three hours of the day. Caught 35 bluegills and two small bass. Kept about andozen gills and the bass. Had about 5-6" of ice. Hope the rain this weekend doesn't mess things up.

Great job on the gills! Also, congrats on braving the cold...to the victor go the spoils!
