Where to refill 5 pound tanks
« on: Oct 28, 2023, 02:03 PM »
Before I buy a 5 pound propane tank, where do you get them refilled at?  Maybe I’m not looking in the right places but want to make sure it won’t be an ordeal to get it filled before I go buying one.  Two places local that do tanks won’t fill anything smaller than a 20.

It might help to know where in the world you live.
In my area here in Alaska any place that fills propane will fill that size tank.
Though I usually go to my local U-Haul for the best price and their great customer service.

Ah, Uhaul.   I’ll check them out.  I meant in general but I’m in the Western end of PA.

Just got a 5 lb bottle myself, I also live in western PA. If you find a place please post it on here. Didn't think it would be an issue, I will have call around as well. Thanks

Any place that sells propane can do it, no different than a 20 pounder.  I got mine done at Costco.

I have my 5lb tanks filled at the same places that fill my 20lb tanks, often filling both at the same time. The valves and connections on the 5lb tanks are identical to the 20lb tanks and are filled the same way with the same equipment. I have done both at the local gas stations that fill tanks and occasionally at U-Haul that refills tanks.
You can't buy happiness, but you can buy fishing gear....and that's kind of the same thing.

Are any of you finding 5lb’ers for less than $70 and willing to share where?

. I decided to order one and I’ll make some calls looking for a place.  I already asked Tractor Supply and they won’t do tanks smaller than 20’s.  I ordered a Flameking with a fuel gauge from Amazon for $51.

Just saw one of those equipment rental places near me started filling tanks, so I might have to check them out.  A couple u-haul places around me also fill them, and I know of at least one bait shop that does (far side of town though).

Bunch of the big box hardware stores and farm supply stores also carry the 5lb tanks. In spring and summer they typically are priced around $50 in store, but by hunting season and ice fishing season that price usually climbs closer toward $70. So if you find it online for $50, that's probably the best price you'll get.

A bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work.

Good Luck to you Western PA guys getting that tank filled.  Alams Hardware in Aliquippa, PA will take care of your needs.  No 1#lbers but they can definitely do you 5#lber.

Thanks for the info!   I talked to someone at Agway yesterday. He said they’d probably do the 5 but he wanted to see it before saying yes for sure.

I fill my 5 lb tank at ACE. There are a couple of other places that I have used. But they charged for a 20 LB tank on the 5. I can’t say I have ever had a problem getting it filled anywhere I went.

Agway looks to be my option. Had it filled tonight no problem.  I don’t know what the deal is with the Tractor Supply stores you have near you all but one here doesn’t even do propane refills and the other refuses to refill anything smaller than 20’s. I’m glad it works out for those of you getting them filled there. Mine won’t. Now we just need ice.

get 2 of these and connect with a hose. The 20# gets put upside down.
You can drill the hole out to 1/8 or so for a better transfer.
The connector with the fat threads have a check valve that needs to be drilled and the hole is already 3/16.

disclaimer- I am not a pro. This needs to be verified and you should consult your propane professional before doing any work
