1000 or 2000 watt generator for Perm.
« on: Dec 03, 2011, 06:11 PM »
I was looking at the Honda 2000i and 3000i generators for powering the hardside.  I can now see the 3000i is WAY to big.
1000i may not be adequate to power a small microwave.   Thoughts on the 2000i..  Or other generators in it's class for weight, noise, economy?
What about those cheap Sportsman Mini at HD.

I have a 2000i Honda... We used it to power our deer shack which was a 37 ft 5th wheel camper. We would run pizza over, playstion, TV, all the lights, fan ect on the 2000i. The generator would bog down when we started the microwave or the pizza over but always powered it fine even with all the lights, tv, playstaion, fan ect all on at the same time.

I would think that a 1000i would power a small microwave just fine if that is all you will power other than maybe 1 light, but thats still just a guess. Honda generators are AWESOME! They sip gas, start easy even in the cold, are quiet, smooth, ect.......

Gander mt has good prices on them most of the time.

I bought a Honda 2000i a few months back because I have a customer that wants me to incorporate some reclaimed barn wood into a kitchen project I am doing for them in his collector car shed. The places where I can get the wood don't have power and I have always wanted a generator anyway so I pulled the trigger on it.

I now found that I can keep the gen in my enclosed trailer and when I am installing and instead of running cords from the customers house to run the miter saw and table saw I just start the generator and it runs them and now i don't worry about bowing fuses etc.

I think at some point I will buy a bigger unit but this one has done what I asked of it and it uses so little gas and is so quiet that I know i will use it to power the fish house equipment.

I use a Honda 1000i for my wheel house. It works great for me. It isn't big enough to run an electric fry pan or toaster though.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

I think you are better off with the 2000.
I have both and almost alway use the 2000 because it just does better.

First I would check the wattage on the microwave you want to power. If it's 800 watts or less you're fine with a 1,000 watt generator. Just make sure that is a 1,000 running watts generator and not a lesser wattage with up to a 1,000 surge. You never want to run the generator at max if you can avoid it.
If you think you may add a radio, small tv, lights or anything else then you may want to consider buying larger now ... it's cheaper in the long run. JMO.
