A decent pike on a slow weekend
« on: Dec 13, 2015, 09:20 PM »
Slower weekend than usual... Lots of big marks on the bird but they seemed to be lock jawed until today.... Caught 6-7 pike once the sun came out. This was the best of the day at 19lb 10oz.

Good looking northern! You Canadian boys have sum amazing Walleye and Northerns in your parts! Very envious of your options up there. What do you guys typically use to catch the Northerns when targeting them? Minnows, spoons or jigs? Here in Utah I've had the best success dropping dead minnows down on quick strike rigs and staying on top of the finder reading the fish's reaction! Thanks

In this particular lake they have the world record for Burbot (around 26lbs) and Rainbow Trout (48lbs) as well.  For northers we us mostly tip up's with large cisco's, herrings or smelts (8-12") on a quick strike or similar homemade rig. No live bait is allowed nor do I see the point of it with how well fishing typically goes. Occasional jigging is typically all that's required if any.

You can of course use minnows for Northern's but they generally produce fish in the 3-5lb range instead of the 7-25lb fish often caught on larger baits. Of course we have many in the province approaching 40lbs annually.
