Help with arguement
« on: Jan 28, 2011, 10:23 AM »
Not a big one really. Wife got me a new Eskimo for Christmas. We went out togethe and when I was done drilling, I set it down and she told me I am supposed to drill hole ,most of the way and put auger in hole standing up so not to wear out handle. I thought this over, and decided it would not wear handle out, but should they be staged in upright position? or does it matter?

I lay mine down.  I don't know if it hurts them or not but I don't like the idea of the auger resting on the blades.

RTFM!

I do believe most if not all manufacturers specifically say in the MANUAL to NEVER leave your auger standing in a half drilled hole.  :nono:

I know a lot of people do it but I have seen some end up with bent augers as a result. On a warm day, they will melt into the ice and end up leaning way over and it puts a lot of stress on the lower part of the corkscrew and you WILL end up with problems.

 I always lay mine down.

You are right, but considering the argument is with your wife, you lose either way. ;D

Lay it down.  Seen too many guys leave it in a half drilled hole and the thing freezes and is stuck.  Take a pipe wrench to it to get it out.  Not worth it, and I really cant see a legitimate reason for doing it.

Martian, you still have a chance to win this discussion, but winning these things with someone you're close to may not be a good idea.

Have her read what the guys have to say about broken plastic handles on their newer type augers that fell over while in a partial hole.

Good luck, if you go there, ha.

"Wear out" the handle?

Maybe on one of those cheap strikemasters with the plastic handles.

No lay it down with the blade cover attached. It says in my manual to NEVER EVER put the auger in a half drilled hole.

lay it down...  i always left my old Model 30 jiffy standing up... I " lightend the load' and bought an  STX pro, i treated it  the same by drilling and standing... often time hanging my  jacket on it ( as I had done with the model 30).. well... it cracked the composit housing on the new HTT transmission... it took me 6 months to get a new housing ( which I replaced myself) I now set it in an auger rest I made for my sled...
