You can catch both pike and tigers...I've caught both here in the past.

They've been stocking these for years so there is definitely some trophy size fish swimming around.

I believe the big derby there is next weekend.

Good Luck

i only fish the chauncy looking for pike or a tiger.....so in other words, its a very slow pond...fish are few and far between.  been so slow this year, locals are passing on the derby, may do so myself....to much fishing pressure...

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY I DO NOT BELEIVE YOU WERE STUCK IN 2FOW BECAUSE THE THE MIDDLE OF THAT PLACE IS ALWAYS OPEN. I HAVE BEEN THERE EVERY YEAR GUYS HAVE SHOWED UP AT 6:00 7:00 AND HAD KNOW PROBLEM GETTING A SPOT. KNOW ABOUT BEING SLOW WELCOME TO FISHING  THIS IS NOT CACHING. THIS YEAR ALONE I KNOW OF AT LEAST 15 PIKE AND PLENTY OF BIG BASS. AS FOR THE LOCALS NOT FISHING IT ALMOST ALL DO. THE RESON FOR GETTING THERE EARLY IS FOR THERE SPOT THEY KNOW THE LAKE . WE HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEM EVERY ONE HAS A GREAT TIME.

No biggie Baitman

I understand...just my personal experience.....the year I went there was little available ice to drill..walked out at 5:30am  ....ended up in a small corner south of the hospital.....we walked the pond even to the middle....spent more time walkin around knowin we couldnt drill and stay together because there were 6 of us...I'm gonna get there soon but not on derby day..I know there's big ones in there... :)

by the way..we did have a great time nonetheless ... ;)...K

I stayed overnight last year and Drilled my holes where I wanted to put my traps and put light sticks in the snow next to the hole. Slept in my portable and when I got up in the morning guys evrywhere but everyone stayed away from my holes. Great Derby put on by a good group of guys

This is what kills me " Check-in starts at 6:00a.m. at the Town Beach Pavilion. The tournament runs from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 P.m.  All contestants must check-in and receive a weigh-in card before cutting holes. No holes are to be cut before 7:00 a.m.!". Now If I'm  understanding this right I have to wait in line to get my weigh in card with 200 other people 1 hour before the derby starts then run to a spot on the lake but no drilling till 7. I like fishing Chauncy but even on a weekend if your not on their by daybreak your not getting a parking spot anywhere near the hospital.

Man, I've never heard so much complaining.......

1.) Get there early. I've gotten there by 5:00 am.....found a spot, set out my tilts where I wanted to drill holes, had a cup of coffee then walked to the check-in.
Got to the check-in, NO LINE (and never saw a line)......got bait, no problem. Shot the breeze, ate a donut and drank a coffee....walked back to my spot.
Guys seem to just be PO'd when the fishing is slow......oh well. Don't fish it...but quit complaining. I've seen more people complaining about tournies this year. Most tournies are fund raisers and supposed to be fun. Don't fish em.......but I'm tired of the complaining I am seeing. Once they get out of hand they are coming down.
2.) You can't please everyone....don't complain here....just don't attend. These guys go out of their way to plan these things and they aren't easy....trying to make everyone happy is NEVER going to happen.

I fished this tournament for the first time last year and overall had a good experience. The people running the tourney were great and there were no lines waiting to register. I was surprised by the number of people who were there when we arrived at 5:00 AM. We had to walk out a bit from the State Hospital to lay out our tilts but it wasn't too bad. By the start of the tourney the placed had filled up around us but there was still tons of room towards the center of the lake. Fishing was slow but that's what I expected from Chauncy so it wasn't a surprise. At the end the prises were great and everyone I talked with had a great time. We'll be there again this year.

What I didn't expect was all the people on quads zipping through and doing doughnuts in the middle of everyone's tilts. This is just ignorance but what can you do about that?

Mugz I'll take your word for it about lines not being a issue. This will be the 1ST year for me at the derby I'm just envisioning at a cluster f**k at check in.

Blue.....you won't have a problem with the lines or it being a cluster. All I can say is, the fishing is slow. Weigh in anything decent that you catch. We threw back a couple pickeral last year that would have placed.....we just didn't feel they were worthy of a weigh in.
The tourney is a good time....hopefully the weather is decent and you can just enjoy the day....if you are to get a decent fish it's a bonus. Go to the raffle, that's where you can make up for the slow fishing.

I wasn't referring to you.  Bluedog was the one bad mouthing a clubs tournament that hes never been to.  If you had a bad experience, whatever.  But I always get defensive when people bad mouth these different tournaments that theyve never attended.

Ok boys lets drop the - he said - she said stuff. Its a great tourny  even if the fishing can be slow. And the raffles are great. I might be biased because I won an auger last year!! But I have been  going there for years and its always been a good time and run by a great bunch of guys. And like Mugz said, dont be afraid to weigh in a small fish because it could win you some money. And the boards are always updated. Good luck to all who go!!

That a boy Mugz!   :o The bottom Line: This tourney IS one of the best run in central mass. It takes a ton of work and coordination and I for 1 really appreciate it! I get there very early (around 4 or so.. you know, gotta get my spot!) and there has never been ANY issues after 7 getting a spot to fish or getting registered in a minute or so!

If you don't like it, DON't GO! We won't miss you. Do us all a favor, QUIT THE  WHINING!  >:(   geeeeezzz!

Ya, these guys work there butt offto put this tourney on. I think the money goes to help kids get into fishing.

There are small lines to get registered but nothing longer then 10 minutes. Last year there where a couple local kids riding their quads like idiots. Just flagg them down and say something to them. Thats what I did last year and they said sorry and stayed away from my traps.

Most tourney's are slow. Think about it you have 300 guys using augers drilling holes. But if you forget why these tourneys are put on and take them to serious, Then you are missing out on part of the ice fishing experience and that is the meeting of other people who love this sport.

Ron,

You being intimidated look at the size of you. You should have brought Your daughter she would have protected you. ;)

Ron, you are right for the first time guy going to this tourney alone it can be intimidating.

Its a big tourney and if you don't know anyone it can be overwhelming.  A bigger place would be nicer and it being a 2 day event. But its a lot of work putting these things together. I tried to put one together this year in Natick during Feb vacation for kids and I started last year and I still couldn't get it together it fell apart a couple of months ago because of the insurance with the town.

I give credit to anyone who puts these on

i remeber when they use to have it at a1 those days are gone chauncy is small but  these guy's do a great job consiering the size of the place and the amount of peeps that go. and dont forget you can buy your bait right at the beach from jimmy barry, wich is a nice luxry, not to many tourny"s that have bait on site or what ever you need. its all about haveing fun and meeting new freinds and old one's. good luck to all. :icefish:
