Cold Tip Ups, Hot Jigs
« on: Jan 28, 2024, 03:00 PM »
I fished K of C (Hallockville) Pond on the Plainfield/Hawley line from 11 AM to 3 PM.

It was right around freezing, and snowing steadily.

There was 2 to 3 inches of slush on top of about 5 or 6 inches of fairly decent ice.

Very little action on the tip ups, but jigging kept me busy.

I caught four pickerel (biggest 18") on tip ups, but 20 perch and two pickerel (biggest 20") jigging.

Way to get out, Jim. Those pickerel jigging must’ve been a fun fight.

Gotta love that jigging!

I started jigging some years back as a means of keeping active while I waited for traps to trip.

Now it's my primary fishing method, and I still set a few traps to stay true to the overall sport.

My first jigging rod was a kid's medium action rod (3-4' length) and a small trout reel, jigging crappie jigs.
Caught all kinds of fish with that EXCEPT crappie. After seeing how well jigging does thru the ice, I also incorporate jigging small lure in open waters.

It's an all-season successful tactic!
