Ugly sticks are cheap, and they worked fine for me last year. You just don’t want to get a glass rod as they can explode under the pressure the JJ asserts on them.

The Jaw jacker brand rods aren’t bad either.
Perhaps I should not have been a fisherman, he thought. But that was the thing that I was born for.

Ugly sticks are what I used and worked well medium/light is the best combo I’ve noticed to heavy doesn’t leave any play and too light just won’t snap correctly. But agree the rod will take a beating lol
Wait there's ice????

if you're looking for something inexpensive I've heard the walmart "Dock Demon" type rods work great. Reel isn't amazing but depending on what you want/are going for they might hold up. only around $10 I believe for a combo.

I found that a stronger rod was required to hook up reliably. I have had best luck with a 4.5 foot ultralight fishing rod, but I needed to make a custom "jaw jacker" to use it.

I also use a Dock Demon rod (the more expensive 30" one that comes with a spinning reel) and it works great.

I custom make a 35" medium rod specifically for use with the jacker, comes with a loop built into the tip top eye and will come with a flag already installed between the tip top and the second eye.

Any pictures? What is the action of the rod?

I have good luck with the jaw jacker brand rods.  Hook selection does make a difference in catch rate i've learned.
