LG Lakers
« on: Feb 18, 2018, 07:36 AM »
With the NY free fishing weekend, Allan and I decided to make the haul up to LG to try our luck with some lakers.

The weather for Saturday looked perfect, so our plan was to drive up Friday night, spend the night, and hit the ice early. The forecast called for a snow storm Saturday into Sunday, so we planned to leave Saturday afternoon to beat the storm.

We were on the ice around 6:30am. We had a short drag to the laker waters. We decided to leave the tip ups at home and travel light with the jig rods to cover as much water as possible. Our first spot was slow. Marked a few fish but nothing that wanted to commit.

After a short move our luck changed. On the first drop on a fresh hole i saw a fish racing up to my jig as it was dropping. I began reeling up as it got close and it smoked my jig. Our first laker of the day. It wasnt huge but was nice to get the skunk off.

Allan made a lure change to what I was using and was hooked up to his first laker of the day shortly thereafter.

I made another short move and just like my first laker, on the first drop a fish came racing up and smoked my Jig, resulting in my second laker for the day.

Unfortunately that was it for the day. We marked many fish and had alot of follows, but they were all very non committal. We spoke to 8-10 other anglers in the area and many had been skunked. Stating they saw the same thing we did.

I think what did it for us was my home made 1/2oz glow head jigs. These seemed to really pull the fish in and was the only jig that we tried (and we tried a few) that produced.

With a 3hr dive ahead of us and the storm predicted to start around 5pm, we packed up around 1pm and were on our way home.

All in all it was a fun trip. The weather was perfect and luckily we were able to coax a few fish into participating.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

As always a good time on the ice! Many more anglers out there than I was expecting, not to mention all the quads... It was a slow pick, but clearly moving and jigging was the way to go.
Can't wait for the next trip!

Thanks for the tips Jon.  We never made it out to the spot you suggested. The reports we got were questionable ice. Good luck on your trip.
