Title: Countdown
Post by: royjulius on Nov 09, 2017, 02:52 PM
For years I started this countdown thread, but....I've been busy the last couple years and haven't fished much. My band was making an album plus I was working a lot.
As a long-time fisherman of the Black Hills, I believe the first safe ice on the smaller lakes will be the weekend of December 1st. Let's countdown to it.

22 Days!

I've heard some rumors there is a bit of ice on some of the higher elevation lakes right now.  I wouldn't recommend anyone try them, but I think we should have some real good ice in 22 days. Looking forward to it! My first stop is usually Stockade.

Mine too, but I might try Horsethief or Lakota or Bismark on that first weekend just to be safe. Then the next weekend Stockade.

The 2018 State Park stickers have been available for a month now. I got mine already so now I don't have to worry about it til May of 2019. Sweet.

   21 Days!

Areas of Roy Lake out south of Roy Lake Resort had about 4" of ice on them in the protected areas (was some open water out in the middle of the lake). Warmer temps may open it up next week but the cold is coming! Can't wait.

Pike back in Lakota? Not sure exactly what the GFP is doing with that lake. Beautiful lake though and gets good ice early!

I think they are just realizing how many people actually pursue pike and value it as a delicious and beyond renewable food source. Most of my friends go after them and I'm glad the gf&p is finally coming around. Some of my "walleye only" friends are eating them now that they know how to fillet them.  ;D

   18 Days!

Ya it sure seems like we may need to travel north a bit to find decent ice in the next few weeks.  I was up in the cities this past weekend for the Vikings game and saw a few smaller lakes/ponds that were iced over.  I've talked with a few guys that were up on Red lake in MN and there was 5-7 inches up there but that's an 7+ hour drive.

Well I've decided I'll do some bank fishing tomorrow in some spots I used to do well in when I didn't have a boat. I'm still gonna fish. 10 Days!

It looks like it will be the first week in December that northern SD will be back in the ice making mode. Come ice 🤞🏻

I hope their long term forecast is accurate we were getting ice on smaller water that has went away with all this warm weather. They're saying overnight lows in the mid to low teens in a couple weeks. Fingers crossed

Right now, all we can do is hope for a little colder weather up there.😉😉 Good news is....there will be ice there soon

Well, 5 days, but I did some scouting over the weekend, even caught a 3lb pike from shore, and all the smaller lakes are just starting to form ice at inlets and in shady spots. Let's just say....5 Days til we can realistically expect the temps to drop to normal.

I remember it being 70 degrees in November last year, but then it went below 0 all at once and we had the thickest ice I've ever seen in SD. I had my K-Drill all the way to the Dewalt at Stockade. 2 more inches and I woulda had to spud my way through the bottom. I'm gonna stop counting and just watch for the weather to drop. We can just post on this thread when we find good ice.

The weather next week will get it going. Overnight lows in the 20's all week. I did find ice last weekend on some smaller lakes, even caught a 3lb pike from shore at one. That tells me they will freeze up quickly.

The koi pond in my back yard got a skim of ice last night. We're getting close.
