Title: My Ice Shack updated pics
Post by: burty12 on Jan 16, 2012, 07:58 PM
So this year i decided to build a shack for the family and myself. This is the first time i have ever tried any type of construction so easy on the criticism. Here are a few pictures taken with the cell phone sorry for the poor quality, I will snap some pictures with the camera another day.

No criticism here, I think you've nailed it.

Awesome shack with lots of room in there and a spot for the stove out of the way.
Looks like you built it to fit in the back of your truck, I have been thinking of building one just like it.

Keep us updated with lots of pics

That is an awesome design, I love it.

Gives me ideas for shack #3.... LOL

It would fit in the back of the truck but i will be using a 10ft tilt deck trailer to haul it to the lake just seems like the best way to move it around. the skids are 2X8 12 footers a a 3" strip of Teflon on the bottom.

The trailer sure beats loading that into a truck bed.

I like the design, its definetly a nice shack,  It'll be great for the family to be sitting in there and jigging.   One question though  why did you opt to go for 2-2x6's for the ridge pole??? One would have been sufficient.   Definetly gonna be  a heavy shack.   I like it, did I say that already???
Nice shack,  keep those pictures coming,  hurry up and finish b/c ice is here.

hey guys, the ridge pole is two 2X8'S its a little over kill... i had two of them kicking around and both were a little warped so i screwed them together and it wound up being straight that is the only reason i can think of doing that... and under the ridge pole i have two 2X2's stacked and screwed together i think that will be sufficient, what do you guys think?  like i said in my initial post i have no construction background what so ever I'm building it as i go trying to keep things square. lol

I have an 8x16 and with a wood stove i opted out of insulating it. 2 days ago it was -45 Celsius here and we had the door open and were in our t shirts. You could if you want but i don't see it necessary. just my 2 cents.

I would do it this way on both side :)  PS: Remember that screw are not better than nails: they break instead twisting...

Ya i live in northern Alberta and those temps are fairly common. When you get your shack closed in try it out with no insulation at home and see how fast she heats up and make a decision from there good luck and nice build.

You could, but you will probably have plenty of air with the jig holes open and running outside for flags.

I would insulate the lower bench area where your legs will be if it were me too.

Gotcha on them being a little crooked.  Also I see what you were saying about the stacked 2x2's.  You should have taken your long wall side and ran it so that it over lapped your front and back walls

I'm going to add shelves under the side windows to rest a beverage on and on each back wall "the seat back wall" about a foot above the windows there will be self that extends the whole length of the wall.

and i think that will pretty much do it for this year i need to get the shack out and get some fishing done!

it just help tie the walls together for strength.   I understand that your building with little to no construction experience.  Just little tips to get you going in the right direction.   For a Ice shack alot of standard house building construction rules can be thrown out.  But later down the road you may want to make a bigger better shack.

Burty, I love the shack! When I first saw it I thought to myself "wait til he has to move it". Then I saw you are from the "Great White North" and probably have to worry more about an auger extention then weather you can drive on the ice!

Tight lines and enjoy the Shack!

It looks awesome!  I love the shape, with the little "additions" for the bunks and fireplace.  Cool idea.

Are you going to insulate the ceiling?  You'll lose a lot of heat through it, and the snow that lands on your roof will melt.  That melt water is something you don't want working away at your chip-board (OSB I assume?) all day.

Do you plan on putting siding against that OSB?  It doesn't like getting wet.  You've worked hard and done an amazing job...you don't want that stuff swelling up and flaking off, which it eventually will if left unprotected.

Sorry if you've already considered this stuff.  I got a little tired of hearing the same things over and over on my ice hut build thread, but I still appreciated all the advice.

Once again, great looking hut.

I hope the originator of this shack is still around. I love the design of this shack so I have started building a similar one. ;D My plans were very similar to this one already but without the extra stove spot. I have tweaked it a bit to better serve my needs. I elevated the stove to provide a storage area for wood under it. This type of shack seems to be popular out west but not here in ontario. It will be now :o
I will post some pics ASAP.

Don't you think the carpet will retain water, and cause premature rot?? I haven't done anything with the floor in my shack yet for this very reason, don't want to put down something that will retain moisture.

The carpet is for outdoors and has a rubber backing. the plywood under it is pressure treated. i figure any snow on the carpet will melt and get dried by the wood stove. ;D

Title: Re: My Ice Shack updated pics
Post by: miner on Sep 29, 2014, 08:10 AM
I designed this to go on my 5x10 trailer. You could easily adjust the size and weight to go in a truck box. This one is too heavy to lift so i use a boat winch to crank it up my ramp that is on the back of my trailer. My shack is about 12 x 8. I think an 8 x 8 would fit in most trucks well. Just use lighter materials so you can manhandle it easy. ;D

Hey Burty nice to see you back. Any updates on your shack? I started my own thread for my build. My shack will be hitting the ice in a few weeks. http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=292958.0

I was wondering if you would change anything if you were to do it all over again? I was thinking of building one like this.

I think the only thing that I would change is the flooring material. I find the outdoor carpet doesnt dry well. I think some kind of non-slip rubber material would be better and allow for easier cleaning with a broom instead of needing a vacuum.

Other than that the shack is working out great. I have spent several nights out there as well. A little cool when the stove dies out but using firelogs does help. Im glad I built alot of storage room because you do need it. ;D

Is your floor 48 inches or is it wider? I was thinking about going 60 inches wide for mine cause I have the room on my trailer.

I built mine to fit on my 5x10 utility trailer so I went with the max measurements that I could. Just leaving a few inches for clearance. I also placed a boat winch at the front of it so I could crank it up the ramp. I will look to see if I have a pic.

Thanks for the extra pics. I like you how set up the winch system. I will start building my house this summer, so I will most likely be asking you questions when the time comes. If you don't mind.

No problem Im sure you will enjoy building one    ;D.           The boat winch worked great by the way.   I see the original poster Burty12 popped back on a few weeks back. It was his design that I mostly followed. Maybe he can voice in on any changes he would make if any.

Just wondering how wide your benches are. I'm assuming they are 24inches if your floor is 48 inches.

I think they are 24 1/2 inches. I let it overhang a bit so I could use it as a handle to lift the bench up since i have underseat storage.
