I've had good luck jigging with a small pimple tipped with waxies and salmon eggs, just under the ice (a foot or two) or when using a tipup with a worm a few feet down.
both are rigged with small trebles

Sometimes it's not about the fish, but about the fishin'

2 to 5 feet of water.SANDY bottom.I use tip ups with 4 lb. test and #10 Gamakatsu red octopus hooks. On these tip ups i fish Pautzke salmon eggs.I will drop 2 or 3 eggs on the bottom and put 2 on the hook.I like to fish a few inches off bottom.Another technique is to drill 10 to 20 shallow holes and drop 3 eggs down each hole.Check each hole every 20 mins or so.When you find a hole with missing eggs put in a trap or jig with salmon eggs.Powerbait also works well.Experiment with color.

fish sunset lake in orwell. use the smallest bait possible with a hook to match it, just under the ice. before the bait laws i would get pinheads and use the biggest ones in the pail. i don't know about anywhere else, this is the only place i have ever caught them through the ice.

I dont ice fish for trout but I know rainbows love salmon eggs. I would try them first if targeting bows.

I agree with all the above. I would add nightcrawlers thru the ice are also
very effective in shallow water over sand / gravel bottom. You will
catch rainbow in a foot of water.

i was gonna mention glen lake also. some folks jig at night with lights down there holes, like smelt fishing. a 12'' rainbow (although against the law) can be the best pike bait you can get, depending on the lake.

Have had success on Caspian using smelt or shiners just under the ice.....say 8-10 feet.
The closest flag up may be the one that is behind you !

browns can be found just about anywhere in the water column so using a vex and jigging a small Swedish pimple can be very effective especially when locating the depth that most of the fish are hanging then you can set you tip-ups at that depth
