Where?
Wethersfield Cove! The launch is at the end of Main St. in Wethersfield. Google yourself up some directions if you have never been there before. It's right off I91.
When?
Sunday, January 17'th. From sun up, until sundown. Come when you want, leave when you want.
Rain date TBD (although, we did get rained on last year).
What's the deal?
It's rolling now, and watch this post for changes!!!!!. Sign up here, and tell me WHO is coming and WHAT you are bringing.
This is a casual outing to meet/hang out with fellow IceShanty members. OUT OF STATE ICESHANTY MEMBERS THAT WANT TO ATTEND ARE ABSOLUTELY WELCOME!!!!
This event is open to any current IS members, and family and friends who are there with the INTENT of FISHING. There will be women and children on the ice, along with the general public, so this will NOT be a party on ice. We had a great time last year, and we'll have a great one again!
If you are an Ice Chef, bring the grill and let us know if you are cooking for one or more, and what you're bringing. I do ask that if you are cooking for outing members, please bring any serving items required, and provide a garbage bag for disposal. You will need to carry out your trash. Wethersfield does not provide a dumpster at the launch. We want to leave the ice as clean if not cleaner than when we arrived.
If you are fishing this event you must also have your 2010 Freshwater fishing license. Wethersfield Cove is popular and often patroled. Make sure that if you or your family are out there, you are aware of the laws.
Here's a link to the 2009 CT Anglers Guide. http://www.ct.gov/dep/lib/dep/fishing/anglers_guide/anguide_part1.pdf (http://www.ct.gov/dep/lib/dep/fishing/anglers_guide/anguide_part1.pdf)
Connecticut Outfitters sponsored tournament:
FINAL RULES TO BE POSTED, but here's the tentative plans so far:
CT Outfitters will donate 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes for biggest fish, with the first place prize potentially being reserved for pike. This will be updated as the tourney is hashed out.
The prizes are as follows:There will be 3 gift cards for $25 awarded to the 3 largest fish. As we said earlier, the biggest fish will undoubtedly be a pike so CT Outfitters is only going to allow one prize for a pike. This way a bass, perch, crappie, striper will have a shot at a prize. With any luck, the youngsters will have a shot.
If ANYONE catches a walleye in Wethersfield Cove during the get together, there is a $100 reward waiting for you. Come see me or Gary with the fish and we'll hand you a crisp $100
A BIG THANKS TO:
Connecticut Outfitters!!!
512 Silas Deane Hwy.
Wethersfield, CT 06109
860-571-8986
Thank you Gary and Blaine for not only sponsoring the IceShanty CT board, but again offering to provide shiners for the event, and now hosting a tournament! Not only is the store a short 2 minutes from the cove, but Blaine will be in attendance as well. For those of you who are newer to ice fishing, that's the brain to pick. ;) Gary will be in attendance again this year, and cooking too!
They will be open at 6AM for anyone headed in needing supplies.
Shiner update ... CT Outfitters wont have a way to keep that much bait down on the ice so you will need to stop by the shop for your bait. Everyone participating in this event will receive 1 dozen small and 1 dozen medium shiners for free. Blaine will bring extra to the event in case it is needed.
So, lemme know who's coming, and what you're bringing. Feedback is welcome here too.

Bri, I will pull the permit with the DEP next week to make this a little tournament ;) In addition to the bait, CT Outfitters will also donate 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes for biggest fish. We all know that a pike will more than likely win it, so if everyone is OK with it, how about we only allow first prize to be awarded for a pike? That way a perch, bass, cat or striper can also place... ? Let me know what you think. ;)
-
sounds good on the fish and prizes, always good to get out, even better when you got something to fish for.

-
I will be there I will bring some Soda and Home Made Jerky
-
Sorry for the delay in updating. I managed to catch a nasty cold yesterday morning, so I've been mostly sleeping since getting out of work. Broke my New Years Ice fishing tradition too, so this isn't going to be a good weekend. If I feel better, I'm probably going to hit the cove Sunday.
The tourney is a great idea Blaine, thanks for offering to pull the permit! As the rules get hashed out, I'll update the 1'st post.
Linebreaker, here's a pic of the cove. You can see the parking lot on the right. Main St. in Wethersfield runs right into that lot. Also visible is the channel that runs out to the CT river. Obviously you are going to want to skirt that area since the ice tends to be thinner there where the current runs in and out.
As far as species go, what do you want to catch? Largies, smallies, pike, walleye, catfish, crappie, perch, carp, the occasional striper, plus other panfish and baitfish. I don't think the cove is more than 16ft deep, or so. I think the western 1/4 or 1/3 has some flatter, shallower areas.

Thanks Trooper Bri I would like anything as long as we get some flags! We can fit in with everyone. Looking forward to this and may head there tomorrow, Have to see what else is going on first.

Bir-Thanks for getting this get 2 gether started. I will attend the morning half of the event, I will roll solo, and i will be cookin Goose Keilbasa and eggs, hard rolls, etc. I can't wait. This was the best on-ice gathering of last year!!!
-
i have a question about the bait, how do we get it or is it going to be their when we get thier. i really don't care how, would just like to know. thanks
-
we are still deciding wether to bring the baits to the ice, or have guys stop into the shop to pick up before hitting the ice. We are literally a 2 minute drive around the corner form the cove. I will le tyou know what we decide as soon as we do. Thanks-gb
-
Updated.
Jon, nice to see you jump in here. Looking forward to meeting you and the missus.
And thanks Gary for spotting the address error. My cheese must have slid off my cracker before typing that.
-
Man, I'd love to attend this outing, I have never fished the Cove but at $80 for a non-res license I'm not sure!?!? It would be nice to see some of you again! If I don't go, have fun boys
-
I'm in for sure! I will try to bring the wife out, but don't know how keen she will be to that.
I'll bring a 12/24 pk of Coke cans.
Last year was a blast.
-
Are we going to be gathering near the crib again? Would this be "home base" OR "weight in site"? :icefish:
Now that's it's a tournament , is everyone going to spread out all over the cove? :icefish:
-
We'll need a base camp somewhere i'm guessing, just not sure yet. I'm not so keen on that spot we were on last year. I forget if we were on a crib, hole, or sunk boat, but that was the only thing that saved me from a skunk. I'm not a jigger, but even I was wandering from hole to hole with my Marcum.
I haven't heard the official rules, so I'm not sure if there will be a central "weigh station" and/or if we'll also be using the Outfitters winter tourney rules that utilizes photos. You can find those rules in their tourney thread.
Rick, you can get the 3-day inland for 32 bucks. It was 15 or 16 last year, oh well... Here's a link to get you started if you still want in.

I'm jumping in now to renew my ID for 2010. 50 bucks for the All Waters access. Ouch!
-
got mine today to bri when your layed off it realy hurts but you got to have it :P
-
I had fun last year, so count me in! It's looking like I'll be coming down with a neighbor. Not sure what we'll bring for the table, but both of us have portable cooking units. Thanks in advance to the contributors and organizers.
-
I'll most likely be there. Bringing a friend and food and Drink.
-
Anyone have a digital scale they can bring? I don't want to take the scale here out of the shop in case some one wants to weigh in a fish for the shop tourney...
-
blaine i have a berkley hand held that works great and i always have it with me on the ice you can use, also how do we get the shiners that will be supplied by the shop did you figure it out yet?
-
Yes! Bring the scale... THANKS!
Shiner update ... I wont have a way to keep that much bait down on the ice so you will need to stop by the shop for your bait. Everyone participating in this event will receive 1 dozen small and 1 dozen medium shiners for free. I will bring extra to the event in case it is needed :o ;D

thanks blaine i will bring the scale. do you want me to bring it to the shop or just out to the ice will be there around 7

hey Blaine thanks will do, the shop opens at 6 am right? we'll see you guys in the morning. do we need to tell them anything special or just let them know that were in the gathering. like the prize break down. good job with the pike and all the other fish for other places in the tourney. Thanks again to trooper bri and all the others for putting it together this year, looking forward to seeing all of you people.
-
hey i just looked at the weather and it looks like rain. i think we should all say or do an anti rain dance of some kind to help push it away. heres to hoping for better weather. rain rain go away and come back another day. now i think we should all say it so old man winter gets to the point. this is suppoesd to be snow not rain. it's winter her not spring. rain rain go away come back another day.

Updated the header post to reflect the bait and prize status for Sunday.
I can bring one of the CTF scoreboards if needed Blaine. I have the small one, Ron should still have the large one. Do you plan on setting up camp with Frank, Kapt, and me? We certainly haven't picked a spot to target yet.
I watch Channel 3 for weather, and right now there is nothing projected for Sunday. They are watching the potential for a coastal storm to bring us a little snow maybe, but it's too early for me to trust them. I'll take them more seriously this time on Thursday. If we do need to reschedule for any reason (which I doubt), we'll let Blaine pick the rain date too. ;)
I'm going to invite a guy from work to join us. He just got started ice fishing this year and doesn't really own much equipment.
-
Bri... I'd like to set up somewhere central. I hadn't planned on doing much fishing, I thought I should be hanging to BS and weigh in a fish or two and maybe dish out some extra bait if needed. My thoughts were to set up my 6006 near the sunken boat, that's kinda near the middle of the cove. I might be able to jig a bit then. I wasn't there last year so if you guys have a better way or spot just say the word.
Bring the score board. I'm assuming you have a dry erase?
Are guys bringing a ton of food, etc?
What are your thoughts on closing off the weigh in by 2? That way folks could bug out early if they wanted (football).... Or... Go till whenever and post the results here and have the winners pick up the cards at the shop?
-
2 o'clock sounds fine to me. I'm sure not everyone will be there at the crack of dawn, so those with kids in tow will still have plenty of ice time. Pick a later start time if you want the kids to have a better shot.
The spot Spanker had marked over a crib or boat in the northern part of the cove was a snoozer outside of jigging last year. We rarely fish the cove, and have the results to show for it. ;) Sounds like we're trying your spot! Shoot me and Spanker a PM on the time and spot if needed.
Ron will have his snowmobile trailer, Frabill Ranger, and the quad. Spanker will likely have his quad and Ranger too.
I'm sure we'll have enough food for the 4 of us at least. Nothing planned yet, but we'll have eats for sure.
-
The spot Spanker had marked over a crib or boat in the northern part of the cove was a snoozer outside of jigging last year.
LOL. I jigged up about 50 fish sitting in the shanty but never had a flag...1 crappie on a deadstick just outside the frabill.
I'm ok to move elsewhere and try to chase a flag or two!!!!!!
-
I'm thinking bratwurst will be the main attraction on my grill. 20 minutes or so on medium heat, finished in a simmering pot of beer, butter, and onions.
I think I'll be able to bring a couple packs with buns and spicy mustard. If that's not your cup of tea, the real estate will be available as long as there's juice in the bottle.
Weather is looking on the warm side. Maybe I'll try shorts again. ;)
-
i like 2 also the kids get restless after a while
-
Bri,
Put AJ and I down as tentative. Depends on how much night fishing we do , weather looks awesome.
-
Please put me down as a tentative positive wannabee... I am hoping to bring a First Time Ice Fisherman... I think an event like this would be a great intro to ICE FISHING :)
Thanks
MISTERMARTY - Thomaston CT
-
I'll be there. I'll have Coffee and espresso.
-
as usual, things are starting to get in the way of me getting to the fish in on sunday. I'll be by to say hi at some point sunday morning and see whos catching what but won't be able to fish.
E
-
I plan to stop by for the morning shift. Anyone else heading out at 7 am or earlier ?
I can contibute some beverages and long-winded stories.
-
Hell yeah... I'll have the base camp set up around 6:30. if I know Ron and Frank, they'll be there bright and early as well! ;D
-
Ill probably be out at about 8am for a couple hours of jigging, see ya there matt. Man your not kidding about the long winded stories...... hahahaha Itll be good to catch up with everyone
-
We haven't boiled down an exact time, but I'm guessing we'll be getting down there between 6 and 6:30 as well.
Found the CTF scoreboard at Ron's, so it's ready to go. We've got enough food for the 4 of us most likely. If not, I've got a hankering for those garlic wings you guys get delivered to the shop. ;)
-
Cool! You guys just want to meet here at the shop for 6 and head down then?
-
Here's a new wrinkle to tomorrow's get together on the cove... There have been numerous reports of walleye being caught in Wethersfield Cove in the last couple of weeks. Reports up to 9 pounds but no one has produced solid proof yet. Time to put up or shut up! ;D
If ANYONE catches a walleye in Wethersfield Cove during the get together, there is a $100 reward waiting for you. Come see me or Gary with the fish and we'll hand you a crisp $100
-
My possible maybe wannabee..is turning into a gonna be there with a young friend of mine who has never ice fished, I last fished with this high schooler on Opening day 2009 where we found a nice mess of Trout on West Hill Pond... Sunday will be his intro to ICE FISHING... he got a jiggin pole for Christmas and I don't know if he or I am more excited to see him catch some fish...
I will bring some SHRIMP and a FRYPAN to add to the festivities!
My Gas Auger is down for the count (Needs repairs) so I'm bringing my hand choper and really hoping to find a fellow fisherman who will either cut us some holes or allow the use of there auger <any volunteers>
Looking forward to seeing some of you again and/or meeting the rest

I don't think that will be a problem... There will be several Nils out there. The owners all love to show them off ;D

hey thanks for adding some pressure to this event. i made the mistake of leaving the computer and my wife sat down and looked at this. now all she wants is us to catch the first wally now. so she can go shopping with that money, i can't hide the money from her now. lol, looking forward to tomorrow.
-
Sorry I am going to bow out I tweaked my back and kind of stuck inside with muscle relaxers and percs. looking forward to seeing pics

I guess I only fish with 4 tip-ups for Pike.
-
Cool! You guys just want to meet here at the shop for 6 and head down then?
We'll try like hell. Just got to get Ron to move a little quicker when I get there in the morning.
What a gorgeous day today was for fishing, wish I had time to go out. Heck, even tonight is sultry by comparison. Somebody is probably down at the cove right now making up stories of 10lb walleye getting caught by the dozen. ;D
Looking forward to some fun tomorrow! Hopefully that means some good fishing too.
Sorry we're going to miss you Mike. It's early in the season. Maybe someone else will organize a 2'nd outing.
-
Thought I would be there, got the bug and cant make it. Good luck all who do go. Good Fishing :(
-
just wanted to let you all know that we had a great time. good to met most of you and looking forward to seeing some of you guys out on the water. here is the day we had. my daughter iced a 25" inch northern but with no tape and only a pic. my daughter was mad at me and she was criing when i told her that we had to let it go. i didn't want to kill the fish to put it on the board and maybe win something so i dealed with a mad 6 year old, no problem. after she realised that we were all good. the reat of the day was all good.

I had a great time out. I missed it last year but this year I was there. Meet a bunch of you. It was a pleasure to meet and fish with all. I have no pics or vid.I got 1 yellow perch and a dozen medium sized river dace. The first time I ever caught bait. They hit hard and you cant hook them. Little hook sets work. I had a blast. Thanks Trooper Bri for setting this up. Great job
-
Wow... What a day. Congrats to the winners!!!! I just finished playing with the pictures, there are a ton on the CT Outfitters web site. I'll put up a more detailed report later, but for now, here are a few pics on the day:

Hey guys,
It was a great day on the ice. Lots of action early and seemed to start going again as we were leaving. It was great to meet some of you and get some first hand knowledge on the electronics world from Spanky, Blaine and the rest of the gang. Really have a better understanding of the different fish finders out there. Thanks! Had a nice ride home and did not hit any snow until I got to Danbury. Good Luck to you all, look forward to seeing you on the ice again.

NIce fish and pics, Mongosmash, Damion812.
I think we were a little short on SHENNANAGANS though, Kapt?
I left for an hor and no one messed with my stuff? Not like you boys, not at all!
-
You left too early. There were PLENTY of shinanigans... Kapt almost lost conciousness during one of our "episodes"... ;D
-
Yes, I heard you almost choked him to death? Pray tell, what did the dear Kaptain do to deserve it?
-
Looks like a great day on the ice, thank you Blaine for the slide show.
