The BIG One!-{fishing lure that is}
« on: Nov 13, 2007, 11:29 PM »
Hi guys,
Here is a photo of the big pike I carved. :)
I just compleated it tonight.
All I have to do is seal it and add weights to a steel leader for ballast so it slowly sinks.

Hopfully the big pike will go for it.

Thanks Whatpole,

Originally I was going to make it 8 inches, but I had piece of wood left from another project that was 9 inches, so I used it.
I will have to drill two holes side by side to get it down.

Id personally say you should put 2 hooks on it, alot of room for a pike to grab and not get hooked.  Other than that it looks great  ;D

Nice work WW, as always!!!  You are becoming quite the amateur carver.  I thought you normally made your lures out of Antler?

Let use know if that big little bugger works!!! Can't wait to see those pics....

I noticed that most of the pike grab a bait sideways, about midsection to kill it and then turn length ways to swallow. That's my idea on hook placement, but if see them going for the head or tail more it's not to hard to add a extra hook.

brookiebomber,
I carved the pike out of 1.25"x48" dowel.
It took me roughly 3 days of carving and a day of painting.

Polarfish,
It's not a spearing decoy but it does look like one.
I actually made it for ice fishing, spearfishing through the ice is not allowed here.

Neptune,
I do usually make my lures out of antler but I couldn't find a piece of antler large enough for what I wanted so I had to go with wood.
I am use to working with wood also, 95% of my Wood Spirit carvings are out of wood or bark.

You'll have to get an elk antler for big carvings like that.  Could even make one using one of the points with a curve, like its striking at something.

You could drill some holes in that, and add crushed up minnow, etc, for scent.

Thats a very good idea Master Angler. Elk antler would make great fish looking lure. :)

We have an odd elk in the area but finding an elk shed is very very rare. :-\ ::)

I need to go to an area with high consentrations of elk.

Thanks guys. :)

I hope it does catch a big fish.
I will have to drill 2 holes side by side to get it down though, lol.

This is the first one I have made that size so will test it out, but if anyone wants one I could make one to sell, so they can test one also. ;)

I tested in the sink the other day and it took 2 oz to sink it. :o

I now have the wights where the bottom hook use to be and have 2 hooks at eather end of it and one in the middle on modified quick-strike rig.

Now it's rigged just like bait.

Yeah, lol, that is a good avatar for sure.
I hope thats not you snot rocket, that landing looks kind of painful. :woot:

Snot rocket, I have been quite successful for pike, perch and even some walleye with my Water Wizards. This big pike has not been in a lake to test yet hopfully I can sometime this winter.

This is my first fish I caught with my own lure, last winter.

I am also working on a lure that's a basically a jointed swimming lure.
The front part is out of deer antler for weight. It has a lip so it will wiggle on the up stroke. The back half will be out of wood so it will hopfully wiggle both rising or falling.
That's the plan anyways, I will have to test that one to.
It looks kind of like a seahorse, lol. ;D
