I caught one a couple of days ago.   I was fishing for trout near the bottom with worms and up came a Bullhead.

I actually caught my first bullhead through the ice a few weeks ago.  I was jigging for panfish with a white glo-jig tipped w/ a moussie.

My dad, master jigger of bullheads:

hali-jigs tipped with spikes
We also catch them on tip-ups tipped with minnows too.

Caught my first one last February on Hidden Lake in PA. It was the old "Vexilar/sniffer" situation... here it comes, there it goes, here it comes, there it goes, here it... FINALLY, fish on! And up through the ice comes a bullhead!?!?

Needless to say we weren't expecting that! :D

By complete accident last winter near greene point.I had caught just about everything that day, gills, sunnies, crappie , perch, pike bass..My flag goes up where I'd been catching pike and bass.Set my jig rod in the holder and tend the flag, land a nice lmb.Reset and walk back to where I was jigging and I see my rod tip just throbbing up and down really slow. Now I'm thinking what in the world could've picked and tiny jig tipped with spikes laying in the weeds. After a brief tussle and 2-3 lb face full of whiskers comes thru the hole.Good thing he wasn't hooked deep it was the last of my favorite little jigs.

I know a guy that has a pond in his backyard that is filled with bullheads and he lets me ice fish on it. Last year I caught over 50 of them and he let me keep all of them.

I have caught them on tip ups with shiners and jigging.  It is always a shock when one of those ugly mugs comes up the hole.

I caught my first one yesterday (1/26/08) on Loon Lake (NY)while fishing in a Pickerel and Perch tournament. Caught it on a tip up using bass minnows. It was worth $40.00 and a plaque because they had a special Bullhead division just for the heck of it. Only one other Bullhead was weighed in and mine was the largest. Released it after the weigh in to fight another day. Now I just might try using Berkley power baits for catfish on a tip up.
