saw something today that i have never seen before
« on: Feb 23, 2006, 05:18 PM »
Walked out onto Sodus to talk to an old timer.  He had these boards about 5' tall sticking out of the ice.  There was a hole drilled in the top large enough for a coat hanger to fit through.  The metal coat hanger was bent straight an pushed through the hole, then twisted a little to prevent it from falling out.  At the other end he made a loop (eye).  Half way down the board he had two hooks spaced about 16" apart and line wrapped around it, almost like the old jigging poles with out reels.  The line went up and through the hole on the wood, out to the end of the coat hanger and down into the hole.  He drilled a hole next to the one he was fishing to insert the wood and filled it with the ice chips.  Then he had a little slack to the line and a bobber with a traditional rig.  It acted like a 3' spring bobber attached to a 4' pole.  The coolest homemade thing I have ever seen.

FingerLakes,
where did you get on the ice, how much ice, were they biting?
Sorry, just read your SodusPort bay reports
Thanks

I've a friend that has some made up similar to those only about 3' tall with a plastic reel mounted on the board with wire   thinner than a coat-hanger but able to hang perpendicular to the wood. l-  No bobber but the wire would bend when a fish was on. He hung a orange flag on the wire so he could see it a little way aways!!

Kappy, I think he's using 2 x 2

Slipbob....me too, but they make quick and easy (tipdowns??) I like my regular tipdowns more, if I'm using any at all

Sounds like alot of work, and i would think a windy day would cause major problems with something like that. It does sound interesting though. Utes

I had to walk out to check it out first hand.  I would never want to use them, but in concept it worked.  Watched him catch a 12 bass with it.

You should always carry a camera on you for moments like that. Could have been the latest and greatest or the crappiest in the world. Would have loved to see a picture.

Sounds like something that someone less then fortionate to have money to spare could make with spare things around the house.     Could be this old timer didnt havea lot of money to buy a rod and reel with.    Heck he has probably been using that rig for years anyways,    Id be interested in seeing how that worked.
It doesn't matter if you didn't catch anything as long as you had fun.

Kind of sounds like a big pain in the ass but whatever works.  I'd rather have a 24" jig rod than 5' boards and you'll probably catch more fish too.

I've seen those up north on come of the Canadian lakes. We were on Nippissing a few weeks back (slammed the wallleye I might add), and people were using those around the lake. It did look like more of a pain in the ass, and they didn't do too much to jig them. Sitting in chairs and staring at them. About as fun as a rash.

Didn't get a chance to ask what they were called, but I was surprized to see how many canucks were using them. Didn't see too many fish coming out of their holes either.

Never seen that exact rig. Sounds like a real pain. Can't knock it if it works!
But do have, from the old days, Poor Man's Tip Downs. Works good for crappies. Take a wire coat hanger and bend the ends in towards you about 3" on each side. Tie your line to one side. The bent part is your line winder. Bend the hook into a small circle to make your guide. Run your line through the guide with a small split shot and hook with a minnow. When the fish grabs the minnow, the coat hanger tips over in the hole. Almost zero resistance. Not a good rig for a windy day. Used these 25 years ago, while also jigging other holes.
