You can try the Quaker Run Cabin Rental Office.  They probably will not be able to tell you ice thickness, but they'll certainly inform you whether folks are ice fishing or not.  The phone number I have is (716) 354-9121 but I cannot remember if this is Quaker Run Area or Red House Area.

Thanks.....

They is also a state troopers, parks police phone number out there i have it at home will try for tom to post it.

Anyone know of any bait sources down there... I called one place but all they have is 3-4 inch emeralds (which just might have to do)!
Im also looking for easiest directions from Batavia to there.... I guess the easiest way is the thruway over to 219south, then down to 86west... any other opinions?
Its definitely going to be saturday for us, weather and ice conditions permitting, as DAYTONA is sunday and I dont have sattelite hook ups for the ice hut!  :'(

I use them for pike open water and they work good.I don't see why they wouldn't work through the ice.

Yeah, its hit and miss with Park personnel.  Most times I can get at least an idea of whether its worth the drive.  But, yes, the ASP personnel really do not keep up with that info.  Park Police may be better to answer the questions, but they are located in Red House area and may not want to talk to folks about that.  But they do talk to me.  Perks of being an Outdoor Writer, I guess, for whatever its worth:)

I may also be down there this coming weekend.  There is an Outdoors Expo happening in Jamestown this weekend.  Covering it for WeLoveOutdoors.com and whomever may pick up the story.  Doesn't look like a monster show, so I don't know how much time will be needed to work the show.  Of course, if Chautauqua is safe by then, its walleye on!

Yes they will work and they are considered bait fish, catch away.
Forgot I have Monday OFFF Will try to get out monday as well.

Also think about sardines or anchovies that are salted, they will work.
You might also be albe to catch some bait out there?

actually. sardines do work excellent. have seen people use them in the past and have
worked excellent. landed some serious monsters. they normally get them from tops in there sea food dept. dead smelt is another good one to use also besides chubbs. i wonder if they would like the one's in mustard sauce :P

Horned dace----
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/oakorchardfishking/crchub.jpg)

CREEK CHUB
COMMON NAMES: Creek chub, Common chub, Horned dace

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Semotilus atromaculatus

IDENTIFICATION: Creek chubs have a thick body and a broad head. Their mouth is large with the back end of the upper jaw extending beyond the front edge of the eye. Creek chubs have a prominent dusky spot on the front of the dorsal fin. They also have a small flap-like barbel at the back of the upper jaw.

RANGE AND HABITAT: Creek chubs can be found throughout Ohio in small clear, streams and brooks. They prefer areas with scoured bottoms of sand, gravel, and bedrock with well defined riffles and pools. This is a tolerant species that can withstand a wide variety of water conditions.

LIFE HISTORY: Creek chubs spawn in early spring when water temperatures reach 55 F. The males select spawning sites in small streams in smooth water with gravel substrate just above or below a riffle. At these sites, males create a pit, 10 to 12 inches wide, by swimming against the bottom. They may also move stones to the upstream edge of the pit. After the female lays eggs in the pit they are covered with gravel. The young emerge from the gravel and feed on microcrustaceans. Adults consume aquatic and terrestrial insect larvae. Large male creek chubs may consume small crayfish or fish.

JUST THOUGHT I'D HELP HERE!

The names right oak , but the ones I see have several points on the head above the top lip.
They also don't look that green. But this looks encloypedia like so I'll take your word for it.

ANYONE FISHING MONDAY??
Title: Re: Quaker this weekend?????? Whos in

Its the same fish, only they grow "horns" so to speak, right off the top of upper lip like you said! Actually a little higher, kinda mid-way between uper lip and under thier eyes!

So how about it... can anyone help with directions from Batavia, and a suitable bait shop along the way?

The best bet is to take I-90 West, to the 219S, to Salamanca, get on I-86 to Exit 18 (rt 280) and take that to Quaker Lake.

That appears to be the fastest route.

Doc
Title: Re: Quaker this weekend?????? Whos in
Post by: butterworm on Feb 15, 2006, 01:45 PM
the best bet would be 219 into sallysmonkey{salamanca} get on 86 and get off at the quaker exit. as for bait. there is a bait shop in salamanca but do not know his hours. he has the best pike bait in the area along with gear for them. if i can get his number i will make sure you get it and you can give him a call to find out what his hours are. or just take 98 all the way down til you hit the 219 in salamanca. hope that helps oak.

In case anyone is interested,  Salamanca will experience some warmth tomorrow, with some rain as well.  Friday will start warm, and drop to near single-digits as the day turns to night.  Sat and Sun highs are predicted in the very low 20's, with nighttime lows between 10 and 15(fri and sat).

So, based on weatherman accuracy, we have a decent chance at cold weather this weekend.  Sunday may be the better ice condition day of the two.

The honey and I are thinking about making the trip down there this Sat., but would like to know for sure that the ice is going to be safe. If any of you gets good info please post it. It's a two hour drive and I'd hate to make the trip if it's not safe.

Has anybody ever done any good with the trout at Quaker? I see that the DEC stocks them in there and we usually spend a few weekends on Hemlock after them every year, but that doesn't look like it will happen this year.  It's hard to go to a lake with pike in it and fish for trout though.
Thanks,

Hey Oak,
What about panfish? anything decent.
Quaker Lake has some limited numbers of excellent sized crappie, a boatload of bullgills and some decent perch.

There are big trout in Quaker.  Those that avoid becoming pike food do grow to some pretty respectable sizes.  Rainbow trout in the 10lb class are there, as are Brown Trout approaching that size.  They're rare, but they're in there.  Brook Trout are pretty impressive in Quaker as well.  My personal best brookie came from there, at 18 inches.  The lake gets a good amount of breeders from Randolph hatchery, not to mention an increasing volume of 2 year old stockers.

Although the trout fishery isn't what it once was during Quaker's "glory days", it still delivers some impressive catches.  Oh, and the "glory days" i refer to happened pre-pike introduction.....

There aren't any with any size to them in Quaker then?  :woot: LOL.  We camp there a couple times every summer and I never take the canoe.  That will change.  But like I said it's hard to set up for trout in a lake that has good pike in it.
Thanks for the link.
Dave

Dave,
The day those pics were from I had 4 tip-up out.  Two were rigged for trout and two for pike so I was covering all the bases.  I also had two jigging poles which I only caught pike on.  Best bet is to try to catch everything in one trip  ;D!  Actually the difference in distance from where the trout were caught to where the pike were caught is 50 yards so you really can fish for everything in one trip.

Thanks Bobman,
I'm hoping to get down there this weekend but I still haven't heard any reports on how the ice is.  I'm a big fat man with a lot of gear, and I don't want to be a wet big fat man with a lot of wet gear!  ;D  Also it's a long drive for me if there isn't going to be ice to fish on. I have to have at least 3" plus good black to get on it.

I haven't been anywhere but Loon and Honeoye yet this year and neither of them have either Pike or trout in any numbers to speak of.  I'd love to tangle with something a little bigger than the 28" pickerel that is my best so far this winter. And it's always fun to fish new water with some new faces.

Please keep me posted.
Thanks ;D
Dave

deeper water gairz. the pike seem to be in the shallow water there. at least that is the way it has been when i have gone there. need to suspend bait about 3 to 4 ft from bottom.{for trout}

Bobman, where are the trout in this place?  in deeper or shallower?

Yeah, what butterworm said.  All the trout I've seen taken there were over deeper water than the pike.  The ones I got last time were suspended (4-6') over about 20' while the pike were on the bottom in 10-12'.  In fact one pike I got one a jigging pole picked my bait up off the bottom.  I just put fresh bait on and dropped my line to the bottom, tightened up the slack and he was on.

Bobman,
What do you use for bait for the Trout?

I had my tip-ups rigged with a 3' flouro leader (4lb vanish) and a Gamakatsu blood red octopus hook (size 6) with a small split shot to keep the bait down.  I use emerald shiners, the smaller perch size about 2-3", hooked just behind the dorsal in the back.

Butterworm,
Thanks for the heads up.  I hope that dbalm can get cell service down there, we didn't have any luck this summer when we were camping.

I just got off the phone with radeester and he says that he thinks that he and his girl are out for Sat. My honey and I may wait until Sun. to make the trip. That will give the ice another 24 hours to set up and the weather is supposed to be a little better by then.  Maybe we'll go both days, who knows.   ;D ;D

What's more important, fishing or the 500?  I bet we go fishing!  :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

Post by: doctariAFC on Feb 17, 2006, 02:38 PM
Hey, I know what that's all about!  A couple years bakc I went to check the tip ups during a windy day, no anchor on the hut.  The next thing I hear is a scraping/ dragging sound and some serious laughter.  I turn around and here comes the hut, straight at me....  THEOZON and another guy are about wetting themselves, as they think I am it the hut.

Two years ago on Chautauqua Lake, I was fishing in a hurricane-like BlizzARD, while gator007 and his GF are in their hut (I was in my own hut).  Despite having my hut tied off to the Quad, with the quad's brakes set, a gust of wind hit the hut, dragged the hut, me AND THE QUAD 3 or 4 feet.

One thing is for certain...  THE WIND BLOWS!

Kinda getting the notion to scarp the idea though... all the conditions from the last 24hrs. are making me nervous about wasting a 2 hour drive for nothing!
As soon as I get the call, I will be sure to post it here for you all!

Ok, gotta write this fast...wife and kids are waiting to go to dinner......

Derek called, he said the shore looks sketchy but if I can get ahold of Tim (hookedonice) and have him bring down planks, we should be alright!
Nick went out on it, didnt jump up and down, but said he put some weight into it and it held him.
They then proceeded to toss some big rogs and logs out onto it and none of them broke thru either.
They didnt drill any holes because they just got there and it is dark out there, so they cant see what they are doing! They were going camping... what, no flashlight???...lol
Well, there you have it... that is what we all have been waiting for!  Im still unsure!  :-\

Gair,
I am not very familiar with the lake but i will do my best...I went pat the gate and paid my 6 bucks i then drove straight to the clearing on the left lots of people parked there. We had to walk down a good sized hill at the bottom there was  a tree we went to the right maybe 100 yards and out maybe 200 yards where the depth goes 12 to 15 fow. there was good ice 10 feet away at a tip up my friend who weighs at least 100 pounds more than me had just run over to and landed a fish. When I went to investigate this fish plop through i went not too bad popped right out. Sorry if that doesnt help. Other spot was to the right of this area even more I just wsnt checking and someone told me after that this area was open a few days before.

Well... here it is 5:55am
I was up at 4:30am and while getting dressed I was thinking to myself that it was awefully windy out there!
5:15am I went outside to unload my gear from my truck, and wait for fishincrazy to show!
The whole time I was out there, Im thinking why in gods name did i get out of my nice toasty bed?  :cookoo:
The wind here is at a steady high speed with higher gusts again just like yesterday and its like 2* out there! Fishincrazy hasnt shown up yet! (I waited 25 minutes... screw this!!!  :) )
5:55am Im back in the house writing this to you all and wishing you the best of luck as I curl back up in my nice toasty bed, not even really caring if i fall back to sleep or not! Just the idea of knowing Im here and not out there is fine for me!
Hope lots of pics are taken over the weekend... theres probably not much ice time left!
Have fun, good luck and stay safe and dry! ;)

And to think... I even ran to Tops last night at 10pm for sardines....lmao  ::)

the wind speed and temp at allegheny limestone 8 above and NW 8-11MPH live

bob, be careful with the wind speeds you get from allegany-limestone, the school is in a valley that is basically a 8 mile long funnel of fields, i would check salamanca or randolph wind speeds, dont go by allegany, plus the school is a long way from allegany state park, 30+ miles

yeah, i use weatherbug, im sure it is a good wind everywhere, we have a good wind here in olean as well, holding steady at 15mph. i just wanted to warn you for future looking for info on the state park, allegany-limestone is always colder and windier because of its location, plus its no where near the park. lol we hear that alot because allegany state park is no where near allegany ny or allegany county, its just in the allegany mountains

I'm making the trip tomorrow morning, though I would like a decent report. Has anyone heard from the synegery party that's staying at the cabin? Arch are you still heading down tonight? If nothings posted yet can you give us a report when you arrive?

Will be there as early as I can make, it's a 2 hour drive for us. There will be 2 of us, in a 2 man clam, I wil lbe wearing all black.

Did any body out there ever find out where the bait shop in Salimanca is or if they have pike bait.  My local shop stopped carrying them last summer so I've got to find some somewhere.  I've got a couple dozen 2"-3" shiners but would like some close to twice that size.  ;D

Archbishop,
Save some of those frosties for tomarrow. :roflmao:  We should sacrifice a few to appease the ice gods.

Hali,
Drag your arse down there, what better way to spend a cold and miserable Sunday afternoon than sitting on a frozen lake enjoying a few sodas with a bunch of guys that you barely know.  8) 8) ;D 8) 8)

its right on 219 just as you get into salamanca, itll be on the right hand side on southbound 219. 215 central ave/219, its a little green garage behind a house, they are rareley open and have very little variety of live bait, maybe someone should leave a iceshanty business card so he can get on here and see how much business he is loosing. he usually opens around 8 or 9 whenever he gets out of bed and closes early, i think he does it as a hobby. not even sure if he is open on sunday ???

unlike the bait shop in salamanca i can get beer anytime before 2am ;D
i come fully stocked and ready to go when i am on the ice

Gonna try and make the trip down.  No ice that I know of that is safe up here around Rochester. Hoping to be on the road around 5:30 and get to the lake about 8:30 / 9:00.  It's pretty close to 3 hrs for me.

yes, just as you pass the check in station a row of pine trees will be on the left/lakeside. park by all the vehicles and we will be out there, probably only 100 or so yards from the check in booth

theres better places to fish but with the winds it would be a long walk to find unsafe ice ???

onyunn and rochvalerie are coming down here and staying at my house tonight to lessen the ride in the morning for them and so they can have a few cocktails late night

see you all in the morning

Hope you guys had a good time and there were some fish to be caught.  Wife woke up ill overnight and I didn't want to leave her alone with the kids.  Might have been a rough night after getting back, if I had. :'(

Anyways, the weather looks good for the next week, not much higher than the low 30's during th days later in the coming week.  Should be good ice down there again next weekend.

Already planning on going to the in-laws next weekend Friday and Saturday for fishing on Saturday and Sunday.  Probably a few hours on New Albion also, if it looks good.

Waiting to see some pics????

Just back from Quaker.  She's froze up beautiful, 5"-7" Every hole I drilled.  The shore ice was still a little iffy in spots yet  but there is no trouble getting on, just be carefull.

We got there at 10am on the button and before i had all my tip ups set I had a 24" pike on the ice.  Caught another 20" in the next few minutes and that was it for the day. I talked with most of the guys that were still on the ice when we left and they all said about the same.

Turned out to be a nice day even if the fishing was slow. ;D

Fished Quaker sunday for the first time. We ended up with 5 pike, 2 of them on jigging poles. We also got some small perch. Lots of shanty guys out there, meet a few for the first time. Chatted with kirkwooders and his "bright friend" (LOL) for a while. Also meet gone fishin 44 and his crew from buff. And of course arch and his crew were there. Hung out with them for a while and saw one of the biggest gills I've seen in a while. Heard rumors crowkiller was around but didn't get to meet him. Good ice and it was COLD but had fun and would go back.

Good luck, I won't be able to make it till next weekend. Are you going to go after the pike or sticking to the jigging?

I went out on Sunday I was further up the lake than all of you and by the sounds of it about the same action for pike. I caught at least 100 of the smallest perch i ever saw and not even one worth keeping, oh well nice to be on the ice. I iced 5 small pike (14-20") in 9 and a half COLD hours. And pulling the gear up the hill alone was something i would rather not have to do again. Still, nice to see the solid ice now i can bring the boy out and let him get his first pike  :)
