do you purpose to drill the auger into the ice OR enure that the blade cap is on

I want to make sure I am safe on the ice for myself and others

Good reminder.  All to often it is taken for granted that no one will slip and fall on the blades, or be hurt by the blades in any other way.  Precautions should always be taken!

Either one...they're both better than the alternative. My cover is always on when not in use.

This made me chuckle!

In all seriousness though, my buddy got knicked by my auger blade last year, he reached down to grab it and grabbed the blade end instead of the handle, he probably should have gotten stitches.

I've also seen 3 times, someone pull the protector off the blade and slice their hand from the wrist to the inside of the thumb. One guy wrapped his hand with duck tape and fished for 4hrs, blood dripping everywhere.

I guess if you are too lazy to put the cover on then the next best thing would be to let the red handle dangle out the other end with the blade inside the sled. I'm just too old and grumpy for all this ignorant stuff. Every time I go on the ice I see jig rods with the hook reeled up to the tip and hanging out of the sled. Can't even count how many times I saw guys with hooks buried in their clothes or skin from this. I fish with my dog so I have to be conscious of these safety issues. Just last year while fishing a tournament I saw a guy with a power auger strapped on the front of his ATV with no guard and he had 4 little children with him. He told me to mind my own business and I remembered You can't fix STUPID!

Blood on the ice is a good sign as long as it is fish blood.

Seems like there is a better way to go about saying this then calling a fellow member as harsh as you did.  Not saying you dont have a valid point, just not so harsh.

Every time we are done with the auger,the protector goes back on the blades. It is just like fasten you seat belt. Once you have been in a bad wreak ,it doest bother you to fasten your belt so put your protector on your blades, the life you save might be your own.  Jerry

Safety is always on my mind.  When not in use I have the cover on or have my auger drilled partial in a separate hole.  I prefer having the auger upright, because not only are the blades out of reach, other snowmobile passers can see us when we do sight fishing (on our bellies).  Another tip is to have the dangerous items, knives, auger, hooks, propane all in one spot.  Keep the bag of drinks and food in another spot so the kids won't wonder nearby.

That is a good heads up. I usually just leave it on the ground without the cover on it. From now on I will be putting the cover on it always. I would feel awful if a little kid or the wife fell on that.

Sometimes it takes a message like this to get the rest of us to realize how dangerous these things are.

When my buddy started ice fishing last season the first thing I told him not to do was touch the auger blades. So he was chipping ice off the blade like a dummy and cut his thumb real bad. Lol some people just never learn.

that's why when I'm done drilling my holes I put my auger behind my hut and stay clear from it...

It is bad on the blades as well. It will always lean to one side or the other and put undue pressure on the corner of one blade. I used to stand mine up but have sense stopped doing it.
