home made ice flies
« on: Dec 15, 2010, 05:03 AM »
Ive seen a few posts on here now about ice flies and just last night someone asking to do a ice fly swap.  I tied up a few last week I'm gonna test out today that aren't your normal flies.  i'' take some pics of them later and post them, if they work too well today maybe i wont!  ;)  .  Lets see what other out there are tying up.  Post your pictures and how you fish your flies.

Not sure why we can't share some flies ???
Here's a pattern I've been dabbling with.

A work in progress.

Nice tie!  i havet gotten around to taking some pics of mine.  I tired one out today with no success,  They came up and looked at it on the flasher but werent interested in it.  not sure if they were confused or scared!  The ones i tied up were minnow imitations rather than  shrimp or nymphs to mess around with.

Let's just do it by PM. Post your patterns and PM if you would like to swap. Personally, I'll send some of my flies to anyone who'd like to try them. I don't sell anything and if they want to return the favor...I'll appreciate it very much.

After all, that's what this site is supposed to be about....sharing!

Sounds like a plan.  here are a few i was playing around with.  i tried the one with the double hooks today with no luck but like i said before it got them interested and they were checking it out,  I didn't give it too much time due to high winds and numb fingers.  Also found that I needed a split shot to get it down even though i have a lead wrap on the shanks of the hooks.  Could have been the amount of slush in the hole as well hindering just about anything from sinking down without substantial weight.

Great ideas.

Weight without bulk is definitely a problem.

I'm going to find some tungsten bead eyes and dumb bell eyes and try a couple of other ideas I have. Love the clouser styles.

These are flies that I have been tying for years and they do a great job out on the ice.  Weight is always an issue, so that's why I use a conehead.  I tie dropper flies without the cones as well and they are deadly.

Glad to see this tread is getting some action!  Very nice flies tied by all,  I deff need to get some more weight for my ties.  i always seem to have that problem when I'm looking to tie  big heavy streamers to troll.

Look Very good guys, I have all of the equipment to tie flys and neglect to every year...Not like I don't have the time in the winter. Guess i need to get more motivated and just do it. Keep em' coming, It is nice to see all of the different designs.

I be stealing all these ideas. I got a rattle bead fly from a guy last year on Storey.

Hi guys,
I had no idea that flies could be the hot ticket fishing through the ice. My wife will be so pleased to see my vice come out of hiding again. Any ideas or advice on hook size/type; what to do for weight (copper beads, tungsten beads, lead wrap...) would be greatly appreciated.

RG, that fly in your vice looks like it would be at home swimming in the oatka.

Have a great holiday everyone  and stay on the dry side of the ice.

lots of fly fisherman say they spend their time during the winter tying flies.  i spendmy time ice fishing instead of tying flies and then kick myself for not doing so.  Figure if i tie flies i can use for the ice it may get me to remember to tie some for the  spring!

My vise has a home and is never left unused. It's a relaxing past time and it fills the fly boxes for the spring and summer. GV, you sure your wife will like all the "stuff" coming out of the closet as you sift through materials? ;D

I'm lucky enough to have a spare bedroom to contain my hobby mess ???

Check with Orvis.  I was able to luck into a package 50% off at their flagship store.

Wow - this is a great thread.

I am just getting back into ice fishing this year after a several year hiatus.

All my gear has been dusted off and I am awaiting safe ice levels (at least 6" for me).

I never thought about using a fly for ice fishing, but it sure beats buying jigs and I enjoy tying flies.

Another alternative to buying the eyes from Orvis is just using bead chain that is available in most fly shops (much much cheaper) and you can wrap wire around the hook shank to add even more weight.

Some of the flies posted already look great.
I am going to tie some up , and will add crystal flash to a few - which may help to get the feeshes attention in the murky depths..

I will post up some pics when I get done.

later

Keep the pictures coming guys. I've done some step by step pics on MFF. If anyone wants to learn how...let us know.

One thing about fly tiers, they love to show their stuff ;D

Does anyone know of some reference pics that represent some of the naturals that are on the bottom or occupying some part of the water column. I fish primarily in western NY, Fingerlakes, and Lake Ontario Bays and ponds.

Or...........am I thinking too much and not drinking enough? :-\
