Thinking of getting a Shimano Sienna FD 500.  Has anyone tried this reel out?  What do you guys think?

I would have a hard time saying no to any Shimano reel. I have a couple Sienna and Sahara models and have no complaints. They never turn hard even on the coldest days and the drags are always smooth.

Used them for a few years and I don't think you can go wrong with them.
Take a kid fishing, they make great pack mules.
Put the big ones back for another day eat the small ones.

I picked up the sienna 500 and after 20 yards of berkley 4 lb vanish, I spooled it with berkley 4 lb micro ice and I tried it off the dock with it on the st croix legend. WOW It is real nice, we'll see what the Crappies think of it !  >:D :icefish:

Have one and plan to add a lot more. Don't know if I'll ever go back to Ticas. probably one of the best bang for the buck reels on the market IMO.

Can't bring myself to try one.  I'm VERY happy with my Tica Cetus GV500's.  Just ordered two more tonight.

The AXUSL and the sienna are close to the same reel. The sedona has a super smooth drag, they run around 60.00

Shimano is a great name and they make great products. However, I tried two sienna fd 500s last year and I didn't really care for them in the cold. The bail was a little sticky (maybe too much grease) and the drag wasn't very smooth. It may have gotten better eventually with a little break in, however, I traded them for some Tica GV500s. I have 5 Tica GV500s now and are very happy with them. When it is really cold, the bail works well and so does the drag. If you fish in an ice house most of the time, I think the sienna will work fine. But if you are outside in the cold, jumping around hole to hole, I would recommend either the tica gv500 or ss500.

I going to try (OKUMA) fly reels because you don't get any line twist at all, and when fishing a lite bite or those big crappie's it makes a big difference.

I decided to finally get one of these reel's and I love it.  Spooled it with some P-Line Ice and had great success with it.  The drag is super smooth and it held up really well in the cool temperatures.  I will be buying a few more of these reels for sure.  Thanks everyone for your input.

Many of us Carpers use Shimano bait runners and I'd highly reccomend them.

One thing that Shimano is good for over other reels (like my Penn BR's) is that they keep water out extremely well. Folks I know with them say they've gotted dunked over and over in salt water and they've never had an issue.  I need to be a little more careful with my Penn's - but then again they cost $20-$30 less.

I was fishing with Airs24 when he gave these reels a test run, and I agree that ran great, the drag was smooth and reel was smooth.

Im going to wait till he gets them into some seriously cold condition before I buy one, I have purchased some other reels that worked well in the -5 but froze up at -10.

All in all the first outing it worked great

Ive used shimanos for over half my adult life , I have bought other reels but they usually get put in the yearly garage sale. I have sahara's sedona's and sienna's truthfully I like the siennas as well if not better than the higher end shimanos. Im happy to say I am 100% shimano and as long as the quality remains I will be a loyal patron.

Well, after reading all of the posts here and since all of my open water reels are Shimano and I am very satisfied with them, I broke down and spent some of my Cabela's Bucks and ordered the Sienna SN500SD for $29.95.  That's the same price I have been giving for my Tica Cetus GV500's.  If the Shimano out performs the Tica's I'll be impressed and a convert.

My big concern is the GV500 has four ball bearings and one roller bearing.  The Shimano says it has three ball bearings and one roller bearing.  We will see if it affects the smoothness and drag.

I'll let you know how it compares as soon as I get it and get out with it.  That probably won't be until next weekend.

-Jeff

I just got a second Sienna for Xmas along with a 24" JM Meatstick rod. I'm very impressed with the little Shimano for the money. Don't let the bearing count deter you in most cases it doesn't mean much if anything, especially on an ice reel.

I have the 3 of 2500 series for open and am very pleased with them. I would have to assume that the 500 would be just as pleasing to use. I plan on staying with Shimano for a long time, well made and affordable.

I still have had no freezing issues and I'm still really impressed with how smooth this reel is.   When it comes time to lube it, I'm open to options.  I will only be using these reels in the winter so should I use sub-zero lubrication?
