Best Ice Fishing Movie
« on: Sep 16, 2010, 07:08 AM »
I know I said this in another post, and I am sure there has been a post about this, but was wondering  what is your favorite ice fishing movie.  I have to say Grumpy Old Men is the best ice fishing movie ever made.   They show so many real parts of ice fishing.  I love the big walleye being caught, but I was with the "Mooron" I would have kept it, lol.  Great movie so many good parts in it, love "pops" in both grumpy old men movies. now I have to watch the second one.

Yeah there is "Frozen Stupid" filmed here at Houghton Lake, but its probably not in the same quality category as the "Grumpys".  lol.

Grumpy old men is entertaining, but its theme was not ice fishing. I agree that any movie that has ice fishing of any kind I like it. The Frozen Stupid is only based on a mans obsession to ice fishing. By sneaking out to fish and skipping out on the family. The movie is STUPID. It has some parts that show Ernest Borgnine holding his fishing pole upside down. Later he is using it the right way. I can tell you it is nice to watch the directors narrative, that tells you how they came up with some of the ideas. It becomes a great movie to view in the off season when we are waiting for ice.

There's the one with Renee Zelwieger taken over as some plant manager and the employees went ice fishing.  ;D  It was supposed to be based in MN.

I don't think there's any ice fishing in it (it's been a real loooong time since I've seen it), but for some strange reason Strange Brew popped in my head when I saw this thread.

Only one beside Grumpy that I can even remember with kind of ice fishing apparatus at all is Mystery , Alaska.  When the mayor finds out his wife is gettting banged by a player and he goes out to his shanty and she follows him.  (nice shanty, and nice red head wife).

Strange Brew, loved that one when I was younger.  Knew I was old when those guys did the moose voices in the Disney flick Brother Bear.

ding ding ding   we have a winner  lol  I was flipping thru saw the name   kinda equitted the name with possibly ice fishing (cant be much else there LOL)   and of course directv synopsis said ice fishing so watched it   was wierd!  here is the trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEXJPS5tFRg

Review Summary
An idiot savant in crisis is an old cinematic saw, and "Milwaukee, Minnesota" presents Troy Garity as a Wisconsin man with cognitive impairments but enviable intuition, especially when it comes to finding fish in half-frozen lakes. A champion angler, Albert Burroughs feels some extrasensory kinship to those fish wriggling under icy surfaces. When his mother is suddenly, violently out of the picture, the rivals descend. Albert is preyed upon by two father figures and a young harlot, who prizes him as a daft sugar daddy. Rising above the predictable plot, Mr. Garity again proves his enormous talent; after all, he is the son of gifted attention-getters, Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden. Directing his first feature film, Allan Mindel is too taken with a Midwestern strain of weirdos who flounder in ramshackle houses, no-tell hotels and depressing juke joints. The film is ultimately a showcase for Mr. Garity's skills as he reprises the kind of role that has garnered trophies for other actors. Not that he should clear off space on his mantel just yet: while Albert's generosity may compensate for his confusion, Mr. Garity's performance doesn't quite redeem this sorely lacking production. — Ned Martel, The New York Times

Since this thread has turned into where did you see someone ice fishing in a movie.....Reindeer Games with Ben Affleck has a part where the good guys are running across the ice getting shot at by the bad guys.....one guy is in the background in his shanty....he comes out to see what all the fuss is and he runs back in to hide in his shanty.....bad guys take him out from across the lake.

"Grumpy old Men" especially this time of year when the anticipation of the ice fishing season is getting closer. Of course, I can't resist "Grumpier old Men" after watching Grumpy old Men. Then next with fall and Halloween nearing "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" and "Halloween".
"New in Town" and "Milwaukee, Minnesota" are two worth checking out, thanks all.

OK, you guys talked me into it.  I already own Grumpy Old Men, Grumpier Old Men, and Frozen Stupid.  I ordered "New in Town" and "Milwaukee, Minnesota" over the weekend.  Not the best reviews on 'em, but they can't be any worse than Frozen Stupid, even if it did have Ernest Borgnine in it.

ok...I have got to rent that movie...
Albert is special. He can hear the fish talking under the ice. That's his secret to being a champion ice fisherman. He's well into his twenties, but Mom still accompanies him to tournaments, where he has won hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money. When streetsmart Tuey and her hypochondriac teenaged brother, Stan, drift into Albert's quaint Milwaukee suburb, they stumble on an opportunity to fill their empty pockets. Smooth-talking traveling salesman Jerry James has also just arrived. He, too, is on the lookout for a quick buck. Everyone is after wide-eyed Albert's hidden fortune. But everyone has underestimated Albert. He's a lot smarter than everyone thinks. At least he knows that Milwaukee isn't in Minnesota.

Production Status: Released

Logline: Using his skills that make him a gifted fisherman, Albert turns the tables on his seemingly doomed fate, capturing the heart of the woman most eager to deceive him, and fooling the man most intent on destroying him.

Genres: Comedy, Drama and Sports
