they work good until the ice gets thick about 8-12 but they will really cut though some ice be for that.

I have seen a few chainsaws used to cut ice . If a chainsaw is going to cut ice keep a few things in mind .

Chains , bars , sprockets , bearings clutches ,etc will rust if remain wet and un-oiled for any length of time.
Chains made for wood become dull fairly quickly when cutting ice .There may be an "ice" chain... I have never heard of one ...maybe a carbide tipped would work better.

I have seen a few ice cutting operations, way up north.

The group I saw, used an auger for the corners, and then connected the "holes" with one of the handheld ice cutting saws.

The saw that they used had very larger teeth that were widely spaced.

Hope this helps,

That looks like the same basic design.

They had a couple of these type of saws, and a big harpoon for getting the blocks of ice out.

I have an ice saw and it works great.  Much easier if you drill the holes and then connect the dots though.  I bought some antique ice tongs off of ebay and they work great.  It's amazing the big chunks of ice you can pull out.  Make sure to put the block back in after your done and then mark it with a stick or something.

make sure you use vegie oil in place of bar oil. little better for the fishies! also if it stays floating in the hole just toss in a kitchen sponge and it will absorb it all up in minutes.
once home give sprockets and such a coat of wd-40...

we use chain saws to cut race holes on the rivers up here for smelts shacks work great until the ice gets thicker than the length of the blade just use the vegtable oil in place and you should be fine

Ice Saw all the way!!  I have chopped spearing holes using a number of different ways, ie.. spud bar, chain saw, old hand wood saws, augers, etc.  My best luck is with a Ice Saw until the ice gets about 36" thick.  After that I auger a bunch of holes and then use the saw and spud bar to shape the hole and use the saw to bevel about 18" off the bottom edges of the hole.  Chain saws work, but you end up soaking wet and when it's below zero the chain saw starts to freeze up.  If you do get an Ice Saw be sure to get one from www.icesaws.com, they are the best.  Just my $.02
