I remember trolling for Salmon the middle of January at Forest lake Methuen. It was a while back maybe 15 years or so.

I remember they used to put those big breeders in Forest and Plug's. During cold winters guys would get them on tip ups. Must have been quite a struggle getting one of those thru a 6" hole.

Biggest I ever got was 30in out of little pond in Plymouth, most I ever caught was out of Peters, masspike got one w me one year on long pond in Plymouth using a micro spin noodle jig rod and a 1/32oz chartreuse shad dart on 2lb test, that was the coolest bc it seemed to take us an hour to get it, that one was 8lbs, biggest I ever seen was sheep’s pond in Brewster, 36in 18lb on a tip up w a big old hook jaw that looked like a king

It’s dumping rain down here now, all the ponds around me are open, starting to doubt my forecast of walkable ice by weekend, it’s going to be cold for a few days I just don’t think enough to make a 2 day season

Scouted around Central mass Auburn, millbury, grafton area on Sunday. Saw a couple places with a good coat of ice after that rain. Definitely a plus for the cold snap this week! I'm thinking something around this area will be good to go by Saturday. I'll be checking again on Thursday. I know there's a couple places in the western hills I could fish now, but it's 2+ hrs away.  Saving the long hauls for March. I did get a message of someone on the ice in Rutland on Monday.
Stay safe everyone

Thought I could ice fish this morning in the CT River Valley.  The first hole at my first pond had 4 inches and I thought I was good to go.  But further out there was a 1/2 inch surface layer, a layer of water, then unknown ice below.  I gave up on this pond and tried another with 3 inches near shore - one inch below my bottom line.  I'm convinced that after tomorrow's cold both of these ponds will be fishable at least until the warmer weather later next week.

I finally got out on my first ice trip this morning onto a CT River Valley trout water body.  There were four inches of ice, but there were areas under snow where I slogged through slush.  I was not feeling very comfortable with the ice, but there were two other groups and it was well worth it.  Jigging 1.5 hours with a Swedish Pimple or Hali and mealworm resulted in my keeping three rainbow trout and releasing four others.  I also got a beautiful yellow perch.  Suprisingly though, nothing at all on a deadsticked Powerbait either just below the ice or at depth.
