The past two years we been doing very well northeast of Pinehurst in shallower water less than 50 ft it's just finding them
and yes those are perch stacked over six ft of the nottom
That is a nice school. I'm going to try that direction. Usually go off the Catt or sturgeon. Thanks for the inspiration. Let's find them on the ice now.

That's a good walleye spring spot.

I drove past Hambug Beach today and saw a very flat like surface starting to  form up. The temp in Angola says 59 degrees F. Possibly if the ice is as thick as they say, over 6 inches, The ice should hold up, and a new skim coat added.

It would appear that it should be safe if we get a 15 degree or below night. There still remains lots of top water in many areas. I noticed lots of water flowing on the ice off Muddy Creek in point Breeze, and Big Sister Creek in Evans is running higher by the minute. I did not look at 18 mile creek, nor did I pass Pinehurst, sorry!

Lots of iffy situations, and so called " If Comes " have to be, taken in consideration now,and over the weekend.

Going by the Union Ship Canal and those barges by Bouquard Marina also showed open waters and diminished ice fields, and I only saw 7  ice fishermen in the Small Boat Harbor, only 1 was in the open toward Freezer Queen Dock

Lots of time for fishing unless we get more warm temps. I myself will wait till judgement on Saturday and Sunday!

  Tight Lines!  :)

It is almost 6 PM Thursday here in Point Breeze Angola

I just went outside and there is a very, very hard rain falling at this time. Most of the previous 15 inches of remaining snow is now history. Think I will watch Ice fishing videos to take my mind off the pounding rain! Lol

Thanks for the great report. It is pouring here. Frustrating weather. The only thing I want warm is the handle of my ice fishing rod.

I`m sure everyone is watching the weather. Big freeze coming back. If we can just hold the snowfall to under 8 inches, water on ice should absorb it.
Last time on Erie was 3 years ago the day with the snow storm where everyone was stuck all over. Remember to take a compass!!  We had 2 GPS with us and they said two different directions {can`t see shore}. Miracle we got off with getting stuck 18 times. tried to take quad off truck next day. Would not start {out of gas} wheel wouldn`t turn, broken ball joint/tie rod.
Same year my buddy followed some guys w/ GPS ended up at 18 mile creek instead of Sturgeon. Good thing he had compass.

For how warm and rainy it got the ice held up pretty good. Nice and flat, some pooling at sturgeon and creek areas but solid from pinehurst to hamburg.

That video was cool. Very little snow in Hamburg as of now, maybe 4" of the light stuff. Hope it misses us!

Sorry if pictures aren't to clear. Bad phone. Open water right outside of the harbor in line with the breakwall. Open water both directions I looked.

Thank you for the report and photos. Guess this says it all for Sturgeon right now!

I don't get the open water but who knows what happened. Another waiting game!

Not open water simply 5 inches of water on top of the existing ice. Spudded area this afternoon. Looks like open water but it is still Ice underneath.

How far out did you make it out? I'm just glad you were able to post this. I'm pretty positive it was open. I wish I had binoculars. Thanks for the info

Be careful out there...Shipping closes for the season on the 15th. I'm fishing east for a little bit longer.

Off Tift Street turn down to the Union Ship Canal. Some perch are there. Easy access and no current problems.
You can not take too many perch, unless you can not clean them, give them to your friends and neighbors to clean and cook. The more perch you take, the faster and bigger the rest  will grow. The walleyes and bass will survive from fry to fingerlings.

There were a few guys out today including us, didn't hear of any rescues or problems. Was it before dark? We were on way home with light to spare.

Nevermind, just read the article looks like around 1:00pm today guys were stuck. Glad I talked buddies out of sturgeons today. Ice toward Hamburg and buffalo has been safer it seems. Not much wind neither today.

I know how those guys feel.  I made the same mistake years ago on the Erie ice at Port Clinton, Ohio.  We decided to go out on the ice with a South East wind because the lake at the West end was completely frozen across with a foot or more of ice and we thought  it couldn't move.  We were wrong, the ice shoved way out and opened a crack hundred of yards wide for miles. The coast guard took about fifty of us off that day. I never go on Erie ice anymore if there is any kind of a East wind, especially if there is open water out further.   Glad these guys are safe.
