Lone pine and Dog lake
« on: Jan 27, 2010, 05:08 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has tried either of these yet this year
is it wrong to be turned on by an icehole?

Fished both a couple times this year.  Dog has been good at times and off at others.  I seem to do the best from sun up until about noon for nice perch.  I had one decent day at LP and one really bad one.  I was looking more for perch then pike both places.

Last time I fished Lonepine (it's been quite a few years) either we caught the same pike 25 times or they are ALL 20". There were some decent size pike (7-15 lbs, actually we saw one that was about 40") in Rainbow/Dog lake. Do you still need tribal permits to fish both of these?

I fished LP a few years ago and once this year...found same thing all the pike were about 20", although this year it seems there are fewer pike(alittle bigger however)and more people, holes everywhere in the ice.  I think you need a tribal permit for LP not sure about Dog.

Yes you need a tribal permit for both lakes.  We caught 3 perch 12-13" at LP by the willows on the road side of the lake not to far down form the dike.  Dog Lake seems to have them everywhere.  I have fished every spot on that lake and always catch some fish.  I watched a guy yard in a bunch of big ones a couple weeks ago right in the middle of the lake.  I usually fish the far side out from the houses/cabins.  Good Luck

Neptune,
If you have a good detailed highway map, look north of Hot Springs about 4 miles and find the Lonepine Store.  Lonepine Reservoir is due west of the store.  I'm not sure when or why they changed the name to Dog Lake, but you'll find it along highway 28 as you head toward Plains, about 6 miles south west of Hot Springs.  I'm 60 years old and when I fished this lake as a kid, it was always Rainbow Lake.

The two maps I have and Google maps all refer to the lakes as Dry Fork Reservoir and Rainbow Lake...  So go Figure....

Several years ago we had luck dropping a big daredevil to the bottom and jigging it up fast about 3-4 ft.
