Title: TROPHIES! Favorite Pictures!
Post by: Cargo on Feb 02, 2007, 05:09 PM
I know this is a ice fishing web site. But after seeing some of the Trophies that were posted under ex-Lt "Your favorite Gun", and after ice fishing season ends we are all so busy. The days get longer and we spend less time on the web. So lets post some of our Trophies or favorite pictures of whatever Hunting, Fishing, family, friends, Scenery etc!  If you posted a pic on the "YFG" that ex-Lt started post another of it here and tell a little about it!

Here is a Picture of a dandy Bull the ex-LT harvested. Nice European mount. Whats the story ex-LT?

Place I used to hunt deer for years when we lived on the "dark-side". I saw a small herd or fresh sign there every last time, so when we moved over here, I scouted and they were crossing a small creek, going and coming every day at the same spot. I took my wife in there before first light and we split up, I crossed the creek, she went on down about 50 yards and set up. Soon as my feet hit the other side, they came through single-file, a dozen cows, calves, then a spike and then this guy. I was ready. A double lung shot dropped him where he stood. Only seconds had passed since wifey and I split up and I crossed...she called me on the radio, "You gotta be kidding me!"   :woot:
I knew they would cross in front of one or the other of us...took us all day to pack him out.
Th' "Don's" textbook elk hunt    :roflmao:
     thanks fer posting Big Ice-man!

just a joke...when we lived over on the other side in Sublette Cty... we still have a small place over there we use in the summer. rifle, 30.06 Remington 700 180 grain nosler, which is pretty much responsible for all the meat in the freezer, yeah, it was quite a bonding experience for us. She named the elk "Fred" before we ever got him back to the truck. Too long a story to put in this thread. I hope the guys who post to your thread will also include their stories.  Alright Big Ice, step up to the plate with that big bull you shot!  Thanks again, BI !  ;D

Hunting pics and stories, now you opened a bucket of worms :D I have tons of pics and stories. :D and I had a very lucky year this year. But Will only bore you guys with one at a time LOL.

I spotted a good bull the night before but the cow that was with him had me pegged and I couldn't get closer than about 100 yards. So the next morning I thought I'd give them a rest and moved to the next drainage, well I spooked this guy and a cow and they took off and about a quarter of a mile later I find him again. He had the bull from the night before pinned in the middle of the road just hammering him. Every time this one came down on the other you could hear him go oommph! They were so busy that I was able to sneak up within about 15 yards and when he let the other one up he finally spotted me and I let him have it, one arrow and he ran about 100 yards and piled up nice and close to the road. Really wished I had somebody with a video camera behind me also when it was time to put him in the truck, it was a chore. Oh and I cheated I used a crossbow on him just didn't have time to practice with the bow this last summer.

My best muley.......I was set up overlooking an alfalfa field. Set up in a giant hay stack.....made out of small square bales. Built me a blind with them complete with a benchrest. Sunset neared and here came the parade, there had to be a hundred deer in the feild. The bucks would get bigger the later it became. It was nov. 1st and they where harrasing the does. Until this huge bodied ol boy jumped the fence, he hit the ground with a loud chestey grunt. Every buck in that field turned and looked at him and quit harrasing the does, I knew he was the dominant buck! It was to funny!
One shot with the 270...at probably 400.......good thing I had my hay benchrest!(http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q241/doggbiter/fishdick003.jpg)

Wyohunter,
Thats a nice koke.  I hear that the smallmouth fishing in the gorge can be really good.  I know a guy from home (washington) that has done really well out there in some tournaments.  I am planning a trip to the gorge sometime during open water this year.  Any bass in wyoming is a good one!

This is a shot of the biggest Gulf (of Mexico) Flounder I ever caught. You guys would love it, the water along the seawall is only about 3 feet deep...the flounders lay out in the sand and when the baitfish come through they pin them against the wall and put on the feedbag. You just walk slowly along the seawall, bumping a 1/4 ounce red jig off the bottom. I don't know if you can imagine having an 8 pound flounder on 7 feet of line, wham!...it's a blast!  :woot:      ... just like jigging down an ice-hole.  ;D
       ....it's a southern thang  :roflmao:

Second: wyohunter,
What a beautiful Whitetail! to bad he broke off the other droptine. Super deer anyway great buck congrats! I have shot a number of big three points. They are so impressive with the mass height width. very nice buck!
Now WOW! Bighorn Sheep. broomed off just like it should be a Super Bighorn buddy! OK tell me the size of the bases, length and age? I shot one out of Cody in 1987, it was the hunt of a lifetime 10 days. not quite as nice as yours my friend but a sheep none the less. Like the Dog says it is the ultimate Wyoming Trophy! A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS! WTG!!
Title: Re: TROPHIES! Favorite Pictures!
Post by: wyohunter on Feb 04, 2007, 04:45 PM
Big Ice,
Thank you. the bases were 13 3/8 he was 8 years old his teeth were shot and his growth rings weren't very good for his last couple years he has a really pretty chocolate colored coat allot darker than the others that were with him. And yes it was a hunt of a life time for me too, I really understand how people get addicted to sheep hunting.

Thanks ex-Lt and BIG-ICE, I showed her your responses! ;D    WyoZac Your to funny, BIG-ICE would be a good guide........me?? Probably send you home with no deer......drunk maybe, then you would have to face the wife! :roflmao: That said I might be going back to Chugwater country this year to hunt. Leftover doe antelope's all you can buy, drove in to g&f headquarters and bought a leftover buck tag(speedgoat). General deer and leftover doe-fawn deer but I didn't buy one, the doe fawn that is.

Tagged out 05, didn't go this last fall cause I went back home to southern Missouri and hunted with dad and brother.

OH WAIT.......I forgot 125 THOUSAND ACRES private land, my brother in law is a ranch hand for the outfit that owns it.  ;) ;D

This is a great place to post this info, right here with our trophy shots. A few days ago, the WY House passed  a bill 28-1 to allow bow-hunters to carry a defensive sidearm. Today, that bill was debated in committee in the Senate. If passed, I was told, it will allow us considerably more protection while bow-hunting in grizzly/black bear/wolf/cougar habitat. I also heard that it had been "slightly amended". I'm not certain what that means, but I'm posting all the info I have. Comments or more info, if anyone has it, would be much appreciated by all us ice-fishing bow-hunters.
When I called the legislature to voice my opinion, the lady who took my info inquired whether I carried pepper spray. I answered with a story: While hiking in the Wind RIver Range, I was approached by a granola eating tree hugger, who pointed to my S&W .357 magnum and the pepper spray hanging beside it on my belt.
"Soooo," he whined, "what's the weapon of choice?" My response was simple,
"That's a decision that's made by the bear."  :woot:
      Enough said...LT out     laters                      :roflmao:

By the way LT, the amendment probably limits us to 22LR. :-\

Well, according to the Casper newspaper, the "addendum" is that G&F personnel will be "able to test a carcass" to determine whether the animal was taken with a firearm...I've been in favor of that for years, the law never really addressed the problem except indirectly. Many times as I've bowhunted, I've never considerend shooting a deer with my sidearm and toting it out of the woods bragging it was an archery kill.
Also, I know many several outfitters and a bevy of hunters who've been chased off of elk-kills while bowhunting. Think about it guys, if I archery-shot an elk say...up above Grannier Meadows where I know there's a big black bear (and there is, everybody's seen him) I can't defend that carcass if he decides he wants to claim a hindquarter while I'm in the process of toting it back to my pickup. NO GUNS...not even after the archery kill!  :woot:
Bottom line...hunter decides to take an elk illegally during bow season, there ain't a statute in the state that's gonna change that notion, he's gonna catch that animal in the headlights or night-scope and take it no matter what.  >:D
I understand this post may offend some purist bowhunters and I do not mean to do that. Every hunter is entitled to his own set of ethics, some set their standards a lil differently-not "better or higher" than others, just differently. Long as that firearm never comes out of the holster except in self-defense of a predator, I fail to see the problem.  ;D

I totally agree with you Don, I'm an avid bowhunter for the past 24 yrs and I value my safety and life more than a hungry predator.  Right or Wrong, when I'm in griz country I always carry a side arm and pepper spray.  I carry it in the open and been lucky so far with not being checked.  I hope this gets passed, the ones who poached will always be poachers no matter what laws are in effect.  You're right about grannier meadows and big black bears.  I been bowhunting that area for bears and there's a brute in there that hasn't messesd up yet (he will).  I shot an old dry sow (she was 17 yrs old) two years ago up there.  She was the fiftenth different bear I saw in two years at that bait stand.

Man, there has been some awesome photo's in this thread.  Keep them coming guys.  Here's a pic of the Old Sow I killed not to far from Grannier Meadows!

Whoa! KR, nice bear man! Now here's the big Q...did you eat any of the meat? I killed a Fall-bear in Big Sandy a few years ago, it had been robbing the backpackers food stashes at night. When we cut him open, I split the stomach and it was full of un-digested marshmallows, cellophane, candy-wrappers and aluminum foil...talk about sweet meat, oh yeah. Some hunters I've talked to have told me you can hardly stand to cook the meat on a spring bear though.     so  1. what's your thoughts on that and  2. would you entertain the notion of schooling an old hunter in bear-baiting? Gongrats on the bear, buddy.  ;D  Don
(ps, By the way, KR, I naturally assumed G&F guys had been doing swab-tests on archery-kills long before NOW! But to think they needed a special law enabling them to do so seems to presume that just because there was a no-firearms provision in the old law, that the poachers were not actually shooting animals with guns anyway.)
Title: Re: TROPHIES! Favorite Pictures!
Post by: Ocean Eyes on Feb 10, 2007, 12:58 PM
I'm a fall bear baiter, the mud, snow and wet weather turns me off for the spring hunt.  Plus walleyes are spawning and camping begins.  I turn the meat into jerky or pepper sticks and they don't last long. To be honest, I don't like the steaks or plain burger out of them.  I've also donated some of the meat to the family house in town.  They will take it and aren't picky.

My bait consist of mostly meat scraps and grain with molasses. Rotting dead Carp (From bowfishing) is my usual scent attraction.  Place a few in a black garbage bag and let the hot sun do the work for a few days.
Make sure you double bag the meat of choice to make the scent attraction.  When I place them at the stand they are the last thing I do.  Stand up wind, cut the bag, dump and run.  I don't use anything with wrappers.
I usually just hunt the bow season and some guys I work with go up there and kill a few during gun season.  If you want to go, just let me know.  Anymore I'd rather run the video camera.  I don't think I'll kill another one unless it's MR. BIG!!

Great, thanks, I'd love to, likewise, I don't care to kill another one just yet, but mostly like to go along, see them and experience the art of baiting. We're pretty much outta wall space here, but my Grizzy (23 pound black cat) still has his claws and performs unbelievable de-hairing miracles on hides on the floor. That's why the deer and moose-hides are on the wall out of his reach. Yeah, spring is pretty sloppy up on the Loop Road, besides, I'm fishing. I like Ocean with nightcrawlers, Long Point at ice-out yeeee-haw!

Ocean eyes very nice Black Bear sounds like you put in your time. Well deserved bear.

ex-Lt, The firearm thing is a good thing! Like you said the hunter that crosses the line that illegal kills any animal has to live with it! I can honestly says every animal I have bagged has been legally taken! and it's a good feeling!

Also I quit archery hunting by Jackson because of the bears! The last time I was there I had a pretty bad encounter with a Griz. And the word FUN is no where in the story!

There is a whole new generation of bears, ones that have never been threaten by man, they have absolutely no reason to fear man. We don't need to eradicate them, just make them know who's the Boss! There needs to be some kind of season.
We need a season on wolves to or we might not have enough elk tags to go around. It scares me to death thinking I or future generations might not be able to get a Elk tag every year. Right now if push comes to shove you can buy a general tag. I believe the Jackson herd as already been reduced because of the Wolf.

The newspaper over in Pinedale used to run a buck-a-buck contest where you'd take your deer in, they'd measure the rack and photograph it and give a a $1, then at the end of deer season, they'd give out 1st, 2d and 3d prizes on the three biggest. He took 2d place that year. He was a 4 X 4 with 2 break-offs and nice brow-tines...unfortunately, pics don't do him justice  ;D

 That said I have.....so far....access on 125,000 acres around Chugwater-cheyenne! Went 2 years ago, and filled out..........buck-goat.....and buckdeer...bought additional goat........and filled!!
They had doe-fawn deer available too.......just out of funds!
 Looked to me......all you can eat(afford) doe-fawns!
Thinks about it, and let me know! The ranch-foreman just loved my hillbilly attitude and background!!

Thanks Guys,
I wish I could do it this year trying! Lt I do like the Polaris 500 bought it in 97. I started out with one of those Honda 3 wheelers back in the eighties then went to a Polaris 300. The most use I get out of mine is in the winter don't use it much in the summer, I can't imagine ice fishing w/o one. spoiled I guess.

I've dragged so many elk and Moose out with mine, I've lost track and traveled to so many high-mt spots to fish the upper lakes. When we lived in Boulder, I had a plow on it and it's the only way we stayed plowed out, what a machine!  ;D

I just would like to say I don't kill fish of that quality anymore! The biggest eye I am holding was 14lbs and she is on my wall.
That trip was pretty incredible I can't even began to tell you how many big fish we caught and how many we  broke off at the hole. We would get them to the hole and say oh this one is 10+ and ping there she would go.

Yes , that is a small tiger muskie from Pineview , and the koke is from Strawberry  .  I hear the kokes get much bigger in Flaming Gorge . And the last pic is of a brown trout from Echo . This is the best IS board in my eyes .  :woot: Anyone heard from Ice Troll ? He should be back from Fort Peck by now . Wish I could swing a trip up there .

The Honda 3 wheeler and the green box go back aways.  All the pics you've posted show how important it is to take lots of photos while outdoors.  Those are priceless memories for sure.  You might have to start blurring out the backrounds on some of those photos though, I'm mentally stealing all you secret spots LOL!  Great pics!
