I bought some of these a while back and now I'm wondering why I bothered. IMO, a swivel is needed almost everywhere excpt when using crankbaits. The pkg says to use with spinners but surely you would need a swivel with spinners. Am I missing something here?
I also find them finicky to work with.

I've used these occasionally for ice but never for open water. As for spinner rigs I agree with the need for a swivel. I'd tie the snap to my standing line and make the spinner rigs with a swivel at the non-business end much like I do my tipup leaders. Easy to swap colors or sizes and keeps the business end of the rig uncluttered with terminal hardware. Thing is it's just as easy to tie just a swivel on the standing line and make a loop on the spinner rig for attaching. One less thing to fail.
For the most part those tiny snaps won't accommodate a very thick item. Hook eyes quickly get too large to snap in or damage the snap if you force them. There's a time and a place but there are limits. I have used them to make my own chain droppers and stingers for open water walleyes so don't find them entirely useless.
Been using a SPRO Split Snap for some stuff. They function a bit like a split ring so way more secure than the Fas-Snaps and also have the capability to add a swivel to it. Unfortunately they also suffer the same limitations as the tiny snaps in that there are limitations to how big a wire or hook eye you can insert without damaging the snap. Often I'm using a size a bit bigger than I'd like. The 45# test one seems about right for most non-musky stuff. Still, they are eminently secure and catch zero weeds (big plus).

After mysteriously losing a spoon or jig here and there, I've decided to crimp down more on the snaps. Well that totally defeats the original purpose, but I usually find a use for something.

I use these tied to my tip up line and swivels attached to my pre-made leaders. Make set up and changing a breeze.

So, do they work well for you?

I like to use them on my ice rods. I prefer to tie on a jig and not use the snap for panfish. But I use the snaps when I’m fishing spoons for perch and walleyes. Makes switching out spoons real quick.

they have served me well for walleyes , perch and trout , soft and hard water

So is there some sort of knack in popping a hook or lure into or out of the snap? I found it quite awkward.

Well it is awkward. I've had some success holding the line back against the direction of the snap opening. Also used a forceps to grip the belly of the snap while removing the lure. They are very tiny and not particularly convenient yet a bit more convenient that re-tying.

I treat mine sort of like a solid ring. I leverage to the sides so that the gap is open but not that the ring part is not opening up a gap. So yes forceps or pliers are used.

Tried them didn't care for them. You may well love them.

I only use the large classics , the small ones are to small for my clumsy fingers these days
Like with everything nothing is for everyone
-
Thx---those paper clip type posted by PK23 look like they are a bit easier to use but OTOH a bit more bulky, making them more noticeable.
-
They do come in different sizes, but you are right. They are a little bulky. Don't think I would use one with a lure.
-
I quit using when I lost a few fish on them. The fas snap did not break . The lure just came loose somehow. Which was a big mystery to me. As they were so difficult for me to get lure on in the first place. How the heck did the lure pop off by accident ?
-
I found these in the meantime. They seem so much easier to but harder to accidentally undo

That's what happened to me too. How did it get undone?

i found those tricky too.

I bought some years ago but when I tried to put on very small jigs I found the eye of the jig was too small for the snap to go through.

I end up calling them other things tan awkward. Not hard to get a jig on but a pain to try and get them off.
They're in the shoebox now with all my other junk.

To big a PIA for me especially with cold fingers, I use small xlock snaps much easier and quicker on and off.
-
any link for xclock?

I have some, and use them for switching small spoons. I've also found that taking a lure off of these snaps is tough for my fingers without using pliers.
I have used them to make my own chain droppers and stingers for open water walleyes so don't find them entirely useless.
I've used them for these purposes, as well.
