Braids on ice
« on: Dec 18, 2009, 09:13 AM »
I might give ice braids another try this year; as I switched my open water rods to braid/fluoro leader & noticed the increase in sensitivity.

I previously have used Fireline on ice & hated it-- froze up on rod/ reel, etc. but the decrease in line stretch did produce more hook-ups for me. I currently run Micro Ice & Asso monos.

How do the recent Power Pro, Sufix, Stren ice braids hold up? Again, I want to include a leader of Gamma Fluoro ice...

i love the sensitivity you get with braid , you cant beat the hook sets, you can really rip the lips off them. ive had some problems with knot strenth, i still use it but i retie often. thats my two cents ;D
I can't wait for hell to freeze over.... so I can icefish it!!!!

I prefer Fireline.

I have used Sufix Ice Braid (blue).  It's okay, gets the job done.  Noisy and takes up lots of room on the spool, but packs tight.  6# is more like 4# test diameter.  10# is more like 6# test diameter.

It's slower in jigging action compared to Fireline.  It doesn't get hanged on ice like Fireline would either.  Also good for situations where you might need to hand line and secure a fish in the hole.  Will freeze up, but different from Fireline.  Fireline freezes onto line guides and spool.  Sufix Ice Braid will frost up first before freezing onto spool.  If really cold, it makes bigger ice freeze on line guides.

I use power pro and just tie on a 3 foot leader of 2 to 4 lb flouro.  Works well!

I use Fireline Crystal Ice.

It is not stiff like regular fireline, and it is very sensitive.

I like it for fishing deep ( 20 -30 feet) for perch.

Hope this helps,

I predominatly use yellow power pro on my ice rods which has always worked for me.

I did try out some of the new neon orange Suffix Ice Braid this year as I found it on sale. I have had pretty good luck with it and may consider using it some more next year on some other rods. It stayed very suble on the reel during and after use, has good visiblity and sensitivty and didnt start to ice up until after about 6 hours of use. Caught most of my fish last sunday on my UL with the Suffix on it.
