Title: Anyone do live bait stuffing? Like into tubes?
Post by: anthonyjj on Dec 17, 2016, 12:20 PM
Hi all,
I use live bait all the time when on the hardwater. I have done really well with spikes and waxworms, but no matter how I hook the waxworms, they get beat up or used up very quickly since they are so squishy.  I have tried using all types of artificials (such as the Gulp alive) with not much luck.

Do any of you stuff any artificial baits (such as tubes) with live bait to give them that scent and flavor, and still retain the bait after many bites or catches?

I guess my hope is to reduce the live re-baiting process as much as possible.

Any other type of tips around this idea?

Thanks in advance.

The basis of using live baits is the understanding that you will eventually lose the bait.
The fish that eat worms are focused on the small size, so stuffing the bait into a container (tube) will deter them from eating the tube.
They will pick at it like birds at a suet feeder.

Only large fish that can fit the tube in their mouth might engulf it, but they might also be deterred by the shape.

I would just stick with small jigs that allow the fish to engulf the jig.
Sure, you'll lose baits, but you'll catch lots of fish as well!

usually just use plastics that have scent in them.
