I run both 10lb flouro and 10 stren ice braid.    I run the flouro on really clear lakes and the braid on stained lakes.  I would prefer to run the braid, but on clear lakes it just doens't perform as the flouro.

Rarely do I use straight Fireline or braid of some sort.  If they're smacking a buckshot pounding on the bottom, no problems.   More often, I've got some copolymer line on.  Sometimes floro, for the lookers.

I have both.

I guess the first question is :  How clear is the water?

If I am fishing a river, flowage or lake with stained water - I'll use braid.  Particularly if there are a lot of pike.   If I am fishing and the water is very clear, then I'll use the florocarbon.

Hope this helps,

Wiener

30lb fluoro.  will hold up to the northerns but it wont scare away the walleye.... perfect setup if you have both in your lakes.  If only walleye fishing I would go down to 8-10lb fluoro.

two years ago i was runnin 8# floro on a tipup on upper red in mn and pulled up a 42" pike... took about a half hour but it can be done if you let em tire out...seems like its actually the smaller pike that tend to break off more... never had a problem runnin 8 floro with walleye. just check the leader and retie every couple of trips.
When hell freezes over Ill Ice fish there too

flouro leader material is much more expensive.
Stronger knot
better abrasion resistance
usually more stiff
usually more clear - better invisibility
and you don't want it to develop line memory coils.  It's almost impossible to get it back straighten out.

I don't usually use the Floro leader material.

I go with one of the "knock offs"  usually Berkley Vanish or Transition.

I really like transition, mostly because you can see it well out of the water which helps with tying knots.
I prefer line that is more supple, so that it doesn't affect the movement of my bait.
I really is a matter of personal preference.

I agree with wiener.  Tried Seaguar but found it way too stiff for live bait rigging.  Great for spinners.  Found Vanish to be very supple so I go with that as a tie on for jigging and leaders for bait rigging.  6 lb crystal with 6 lb vanish works great for ice fishing perch and walleye.  It's definitely a matter of what you are comfortable with.  Used to use just 6 lb crystal with great success but since I discovered the Alberto Knot I tie on some floro.  Didn't like having to use ant swivels.

I dont use any mono line at all any more, flouro or not. Much nicer fishing with out the line coiling, looping, the stretch,  I'll stick with the super lines and the sensitivity. A lot less stories about the one that got away as well.

Don't get me wrong, I still think that there is a time and a place for Mono as well.

I have a reel that has #6 mono and I use it when I am fishing deep.  Specifically because of the stretch.

Crappie and Whitefish have very soft mouths and the little bit of extra "play" that I get from the stretch of mono helps to keep from tearing hooks free.

There is a time and a place for every thing.

Good luck and stay on top,

Wiener
