New To Ice Fishing and IceShanty
« on: Jan 26, 2019, 08:58 AM »
Good Morning!
My name is Ron and I am a new ice fisher. I have the basic  stuff I need but not the knowledge. I went to check ice on Lake Lillinonah Thursday during the rain and it was definitely not safe; as I figured. Hoping this cold will freeze it up. I live a few miles from the boat launch.

No specific questions now, but I'm sure I will.

Be safe everybody and good luck.

Ron

Welcome Ronski, nice first post. When you have questions, ask away. There's a pretty good chance someone here can provide a solid answer.

I'll jump in on this too. I'm new to the site and new to ice fishing. Went out last week on a friends pond and caught this guy during my first trip of the year and first time setting up my own gear.  I had 4-5 inches of ice but the pond was making a ton of noise.

ShawnB welcome congratulations on yellow perch personally I have had better catch rate jigging for yellow perch then using tipups but they can be caught that way. You may also want to do a search and read about Tip Downs.  If I may ask a favor of all of you please update your profiles to include your general location. It helps other answer your questions. thank you.

Hey guys, I'm also new to this site but not to ice fishing.  I have been happily practicing ice fishing when time allows for the past 15 years or so, though I would consider myself relatively inexperienced.  I'm in the Danbury area and in the past have mainly frequented Squantz Pond for hardwater along with NY reservoirs.  This site seems to be an incredible resource full of knowledgeable and supportive people and I can only hope to contribite even a fraction of what I am sure to get out of it.

And Shawn, nice perch!  They're always some of my favorite fish to go for and even more so to eat! I would definitely consider myself very cautious when it comes to ice and noise doesn't bother me anynore but I would personally be hesitant on 4-5 inches of white ice...the "official" guidline is 4 inches black and double that for white.  Not a criticism, just don't want to see another angler go through.

Welcome Redgar, for your information in case you have not found either of these topics. In the NY. Reports&Conditions forum/board there is a thread for the NYC water supply reservoirs and in NY. General forum/board there is the Southern New York thread where you can find info. on Dutchess,Putnam ,Westchester counties plus counties on the west side of the Hudson river .(when traveling from Danbury,CT. area)   Some bait shops in CT. that are close to the CT/NY state border sell disease free certified bait fish which are legal to use in NY. waters.

Thanks everybody. Went out for an hour on Squantz pond Monday. 6" ice. Saw a number of unattended tip ups and a propane bottle on the ice. Never saw a car in the lot that could have been the owners. Only had one hour to fish and got nothing. But hey, I went!

Ronski 57  better luck on your next trip. I'm not familar with CT. regulations here in NY. you must be in attendance when your tipups are in the water.

Yeah those tip ups have been therebfor a while now, a few weeks now?  Several anglers have noted them in the Squantz Pond discussions including myself.  I did not notice a name on them while i was there.  Just hoping whoever it was is okay.
