I bring a small fine file to sharpen in the field.
"Hope" is not a good fishing strategy!

Putting weight on my eskimo ice auger ruined the blades. I didn't know that you weren't supposed to when I first got it and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't hardly cut after just one season. Bought a new point+new blades and every time I use it now I let it do its job. Works fine for me now.

I have a Strike Master Lazer, not an Eskimo, and I have found that if I slow the motor down it cuts faster.  It's almost like too many RPM's cause the blades to skim vs. dig in.  Not familiar with the point on an Eskimo but I replace or resharpen the point on mine every year or so.

I found out the hard way to not push too hard on an auger.  My old hand auger got ruined because the blades were bent.  Had to replay the blades in the end.  Now I let my Ion do the work and only had to touch up my blades one with a very fine file.  I let a few friends use it and they must have pushed hard as well, I could feel a burr on the outside of the edge.  Filed it off and it cut like butter.
